I cannot find a basic guide to setting up Boinc under Linux.

I downloaded the .sh file and ran it - but I was a bit nervous about running an executable blind. It seems suspiciously easy for Linux!! I ran the Boincmgr executable and got the GUI, attached to a project and got going. However, when I closed the window it shut the whole thing down. It also lost the work - but I guess that was because I had got less than 1% of it done?

I normally run this machine at run level 3 to save memory. I assume that I should start one of the programs (Boinc or Boincmgr) at reboot from the crontab but which should I run? Are there any command line options?

Hi, Tim, welcome to the Boards.

You\'re asking a lot of your P3 by giving it one of these Models and it\'s easy to see why you\'re trying to conserve memory. It\'s light (below recommendations) on both CPU and memory.

Don\'t sweat the \'easy\' thing. Nice, eh?

You can run from the CL: ./run_client [-options]. I forget the option to list the options (and my main Linux box is on the \'sick list\') but simply adding the \'-\' or \'-list\' might force it. (I used to run from the CL but generally use the GUI now.)

Shouldn\'t lose work if it passes a Checkpoint (every six Model days, 0030 on the 1st, 7th, 13th..., of every Model month [all are 30 days in length]). With that machine, it will take more than a few minutes to get that far. I\'m guessing at least seven seconds per Time Step and there are 72 Time Steps per Model day. Probably at least 45 minutes between Checkpoints, assuming the Model doesn\'t get suspended by your own work. (Should have \'leave in memory when suspended\' in your Preferences to \'Yes\'. Otherwise, it continually gets sent back to start point.)

How did you shut down or close the window? (There are so many open files that the process takes more time than it takes for boinc to shut down.)

Your machine could be doing a lot of paging/swapping and that could lead to instability. Have you kept up routine maintenance, such as blowing dust from CPU heatsink, etc? Are all fans working? Have you run Memtest-86 and Prime-95 lately? It it overclocked?
