Find 4.19 here, and re-install. I\'ve had this trouble; been stuck on version 4.45 for a long time. Tried to overwrite existing files by installing new version on top. I\'d always get an error message telling me I need \"File 1\" from a CD to proceed. What CD? Thanks to Phil for asking the question, and to Les for his answer. Running the installation program for my \"old version\" provided the option to un-install. Just what the doctor ordered. Then, the installation program for the new version (5.2.13) ran smooth as silk. Pleasantly surprised to see un-installation of old version did not erase the files for my ongoing work. With new installation, the \"Projects\" folder was filled with my existing work -- including Sulfur cycle with 63 days of work -- before I even started the new version.) Just starting the new version, and it picked up where the old version left off. Weird and bothersome that the new installation program can’t overwrite the old existing version. Started new Boinc. It took a minute before the Boinc window unfroze, tabs became clickable, and new data appeared within. Lots of CPU activity while waiting for new Boinc to wake up. Neil Nice to hear a success story for a change. :) Weird and bothersome that the new installation program can’t overwrite the old existing version. This should only be necessary for versions before 4.2*, as it was about this time that BOINC was split into 2 separate parts: The Manager (gui), and The worker, (or client) This was to introduce a better way for people with \'farms\' to remotely monitor their \'flock\'. The computer being used is the \'localhost\', and the others are \'remotehosts\'. Normally, with only a single computer and a bit of luck, one doesn\'t get to see the popup for selecting the computer. The \'luck\' is needed because a few Windows programs grab the port used by BOINC for the two halves to \'talk\', so the process stops. But with the latest version, new ports have been allocated, which should remove this (occassional), problem. Because of the splitting, if an attempt is made to overwrite 4.19 with 5.*, it\'s possible to end up with a multi version BOINC, with both 4.19 and 5.*, hence the importance of removing the old version first. |

Started new Boinc. It took a minute before the Boinc window unfroze, tabs became clickable, and new data appeared within. Lots of CPU activity while waiting for new Boinc to wake up. It is normal that the BOINC Manager runs the CPU benchmarks after a software upgrade. This takes exactly one minute, during which you cannot do anything. Then, the installation program for the new version (5.2.13) ran smooth as silk. Just wondering why you didn\'t install the latest and greatest version 5.4.9...? |

Hello PWillener / Author, You wrote: Just wondering why you didn\'t install the latest and greatest version 5.4.9...? I saw the long download list of versions at http://boinc.berkeley.edu/dl/. I saw that the last Windows version was 5.4.9. But I also clicked on the \"Download\" link on the left side of all the CP.n webpages (http://climateapps2.oucs.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc/download.php), which suggests 5.2.13. Maybe I think I thought that maybe 5.4.9 was beta, and 5.2.13 was the real-release. Anyway, I\'ll take your comment as an invitation to upgrade all the way to 5.4.9. It will be a test of Les Bayliss\' comment that with the later versions, I should be able to overwrite the old version by simply running the new installation program. Yup. Ran the new installation program, and it overwrote the old version. Finally, fast and easy. Pretty Statistics graph. Still, the Y axis isn\'t labeled. :) Thanks for getting me up to speed. -Neil- |
