I just switched to a new pc with a Pentium D 920 processor. This pc is build with the gentoo linux 64 bit software en kernel 2.6.16-gentoo-r7. The BOINC client version is 5.2.14 for x86-64-pc-linux-gnu. It is the client provided by gentoo for my platform.
When I try to download new work I get above message. Starting an old work (cancelled) from my old pc runs on this version but communication does not work with your server. For now all work is stopped.

Two of my machines run WinXP64 and it handles the 32-bit boinc versions okay, with Coupled Models.

One of my machines runs SuSE 64-bit 10.0 and it handles the 32-bit boinc okay, with Seasonal Attribution Models.

I think the solution is to use a 32-bit boinc version. That said, I\'m still not sure Gentoo is on the \'good guy\' list, i.e., is supported.

It was tried awhile back during an Alpha or Beta. It was unstable and there were (are) insufficient resources to work on it. It\'s on the list for future attantion and, one suspects, as the number of 64-bit machines increases, so will the priority.

This is no small program. It\'s a port from a British Met Office super-computer program and getting it to behave for a vast array of personal computers, and no small number of OS, is a formidable task.

I just \'upgraded\' to the 64 bit boinc client version 5.4.9 under Kubuntu using their repository instead of downloading from Berkley, and now I get the same error as above. CPDN was working fine until I did the \'upgrade,\' which was done so I could use the BAM account manager.

So: How do I tell the 64 bit boinc client that I want to download and run the 32 bit CPDN app?

As mentioned in my post last May, it runs without intervention on my part (in both WinXP & SuSE 10.0) One suspects there is a \"something\" missing from Kubuntu\'s installation that is present in SuSE\'s.

Have you checked with Kubuntu support/FAQ/help forum?

I have checked a bunch of places including Kubuntu\'s wiki/forums, but have yet to see any resolution that doesn\'t involve manually downloading the binary and manually editing the config files. I suspect that the problem has to do with the way that BOINC reports the OS info to the project, and the way the project selects an executable based on that info. I wrote a suggestion on the BIONC forums that would have the BOINC manager trap that error and automatically download the 32 bit app instead.

Early-on all but one of my machines ran Linux. Now, with the Coupled Model, none. (The Coupled Model is more efficient under Windows, unlike Seasonal and earlier CPDN Models. [Luck of the draw with compiler options to make a stable Model.] I don\'t recall the version numbers.)

I\'ve got a 4 cpus machine but I can use it cause it\'s a XEON em64t! under Debian/Sarge. If boinc has this kind of problems I think it\'s time wasted. I\'ve seen many users with the same problem but no solution from berkeley.

Like a patch, how can I run boinc (a 32bits program) inside my machine? is that possible?

Don\'t have a Quad (yet) but had no trouble running 32-bit CPDN Seasonal Attribution on Dual Core CPU with 64-bit Linux 10.0. There are no 64-bit CPDN versions for PCs, at least, none that are stable.

The CPDN staff doesn\'t program/patch boinc; boinc was built and is maintained through University of California - Berkeley.

The problem is that 64 bit linux is not an officially supported o/s. Even though the 32 bit client apps will run just fine on it, and 64-bit Linux is becoming more popular, nobody at Berkeley seems interested in making it easy for us, yet.

I\'ve posted a couple of links below that can lead you to a solution, though it involves some work. I went back to a 32-bit version of Kubuntu for other reasons, so it doesn\'t really apply to me any more.

Option 1: download the 32-bit boinc software from boinc.berkeley.edu and edit your existing startup scripts to point to the 32-bit version of the executable. Here is a post outlining how I did it on a Debian-based distribution:

Option 2: Get the source code for the boinc_client, modify it so that it responds to the server with the reply it needs to download the 32-bit client applications. This has been done already, a link can be found at the bottom of this discussion:

Option 3: make an app_info file for each client application you want, and specify the 32-bit application request in there. The BSD folks do this, and some have done it for linux-64.

Hi all,
I\'m a little confused by all of this. I have just bought a new PC base-unit which sports an Intel 950D dual-core chip. This apparantly supports the EM64T stuff.
I\'d like to download Linux and run Seasonal Attribution on this PC.

What do I do?

I was looking at Linux Fedora Core 6 - 64bit OS

Is that a good OS to run BOINC? I need a GUI and am not into any kind of programming or Command Line stuff. I just want a straight-forward PC that keeps crunching!
