I have been running the experiment for months. I got close to completing phase one. I left my computer on overnight and now I find my experiment gone and replaced with the BBC experiment. I think last night at 8pm Norton Anti-Virus ran a system scan. Did this interfere with the experiment? Can I go back to the original experiment or is the work lost? (The zip files mentioned in the log file are on my disk.) I find this very frustrating. |

Yes, it\'s quite likely that Norton did cause the crash. When it checks a file, it first locks it so that if it is a virus it can\'t activate. And if this co-incides with when the program needs the file, it doesn\'t wait around until it\'s available, it just trips over and crashes. The model was from December, and there was a faulty batch sent out sometime then, which failed after trickle 24, the end of phase one, so it may have been going to crash anyway. It\'s recommended that the BOINC folder be excluded from both automatic and manual scanning by Norton. Sophos is worse: there is a temp data file in the model\'s folder, which Sophos thinks contains the pinwheel virus, so it deletes the file without telling you, and the model crashes soon after. The only way to recover from a crashed model is from a backup made before the crash. The sulphur models are now not needed, as they were a short project to create sulphate data for the start of the Coupled Ocean models, which were started in mid-february. It\'s only worth completing one now if you\'re nearly finished. The new TCMs were first released as part of the BBCs tv series on climate change, and after the surge of problems from new users had died down, they were then released here as well, but with the BBC logos still in them, as the programmers didn\'t want to risk getting something wrong when changing the files. You can tell which is which from the label: hadcm3ln for BBC hadcm3lbm for cpdn |

Thank you for all of these helpful explanations! That explains a lot! I now know that I need to exclude boinc and that the Sulpher models are obsolete. I guess that\'s good news and means they have served their intended purpose. My other computer is having issues running the hadcm3lbm model but this one just downloaded hadcm3lb. The other computer is running XP Home and is failing to connect frequently after booting. Rebooting or reconnecting always fails to fix the problem but doing system restore to the latest checkpoint seems to get it going again. Both have Norton so I will exclude on each. We will see if that fixes my reconnect issues. Thanks again. Bill |

I thought I would update this thread after recently re-reading it. Each of my PC\'s have been updated to Version 5.4.9 and my Anti-Virus software now excludes: C:\\Program Files\\BOINC\\projects\\www.climateprediction.net Since then I have had no problems and have run up some credits. My second PC is running the BBC experiment and getting credits on their website. |
