Yeah,

I tried attribution.cpdn.org and it worked. Once. No updates after that. After joining bam! global preferences file disappeared again.

Now downloading 5.7.5, I wonder what kind of excitements will follow :)

There was talk in the Shoutbox at BOINCstats that joining BAM deleted all previous individual attachments to projects, and that you needed to start again.
I think there may be something on the BAM part of the web site about it.

Lots. 5.7.5 is a test version to find bugs.

So far (20 minutes) everything OK!

New version failed to create global preferences, but after joining again to http://attribution.cpdn.org and updating preferences I got the xml. After that I could set the preferences easily by using new local preference window (a new thing in a new version) for this old machine. Now it won’t overheat and shut itself down thanks to the % usage level. A point for me, finally :) 4-1

It seems that you can just save a file called global_prefs_override.xml (info from here: http://boinc.berkeley.edu/prefs_override.php) and you can do what you like (locally).

Laters all,
Tonpa

Hi there!

Also got a pref problem, it seems to be quite common--

but I´ve read the thread and did everything suggested (from setting the activity in BOINC manager up to join CPDN for resetting the global prefs), but didnt work.

My problem is the 100% CPU usage, my laptop gets quite hot, which I dont like. A few days ago I set to 75% in climateprediction.net prefs, and it´s showed like this there... but my CPU still runs on 100%.
All other prefs work (graphics, etc.), but this one doesn´t.
As I joined CPDN, the prefs there already showed 75%... but my CPU still runs on 100.

I do not like this, I would not kill my system while participating in climateprediction.net, though I really enjoy it...

greetings
Bernd

1) That part of the prefs is for a future version.
It\'s in BOINC version 5.8, still currently under test.

2) There is a known problem, with the server software not sending changes in prefs back to the user\'s computer.
This won\'t get fixed until the next server software update.

3) Laptops aren\'t designed for the sort of continuous work that is involved in this project.
The disks are smaller, the power supplies often not up to supplying the full voltages for long periods, the cooling fan is smaller and less robust, and the cooling arrangements are barely adequate.

Which is why it\'s recommended that this project NOT be run on laptops.
If you must, then make sure that the computer is well above the support surface, to allow the maximum amount of air flow.

Thank you for your prompt answer.

I now have to think how to get out of the dilemma - I really ´d like to contribute, but I should not...

..just because the most simple thing - control of CPU usage - doesn´t work.

that´s sad.

thanx anyway

I would suggest trying the 5.8.0 client. It seems to be working well, although I think cosmetic issues will prevent it from ever being the recomended client.

Where can I find it to load it down? Only found the 5.8.3, which is not recommended except for testing.

AFAIK, 5.8.0 is also a test version: 5.8.0.
So better stay with 5.8.3 or higher, that is correcting the 5.8.0 bugs

I have noticed that when I update my preferences, sometimes (even when I click \"update\") the change is not picked up by BOINC/CPDN right away. Normally, I have to wait for the computer to restart, or wait until the computer checks in on it\'s own (I have that set at .1 days, so it doesn\'t take THAT long for me).

Hope that helps someone with the \"doesn\'t see my preference changes\" problems.
Sounds like a little patience might be the solution (it would be nice if it did what it was supposed to do, though).

This is not really a problem for me, so I don\'t need a fix. It is just
something I have noticed over time.
