I\'m new to the climate prediction project and just fine-tuned my preferences. The only parameter which is not showing any effect is the CPU usage. Regardless of the setting, my CPU is on 100% which is fine if I do not work. I tried to put it on 50% in order to be able to work and let bonic run in parallel, but nothing (yes I did a refresh).

Any idea how to fix that?

Yes, it\'s easy to fix.
Sit back, relax, have a beer or two.

BOINC runs at the lowest possible priority, and is designed to use ALL available FREE processor time.
If any other process starts, such as you moving the mouse, or pressing a key, BOINC releases resources fast, and allows the other programs to run. Then, when they have finished, BOINC starts using them again.

If you start Windows Task Manager, you\'ll see a process called System Idle Process. This is the amount of processor time that is not being used by anything else, and is what BOINC uses.

Hi Wschwab,

I\'m (also) very new here and already succeeded to bug the hell out of these moderators with annoyingly noobish questions too, but don\'t let that stop you \'cause it\'s the fun way to learn.. Especially with Les and the booze helping out :-)
I take his advise seriously and also do back-ups now an then, read his thread on this if you like: http://bbc.cpdn.org/forum_thread.php?id=1952#8299 (mind to suspend the Project and not the individual Tasks.. been there done that, not funny..)
I had the same reaction you had regarding the CPU usage and also tried to tune it down when not in screen-saver-mode, this is possible by using a process-manager prog called Threadmaster and some registry-tweaks but you really don\'t need it, Les\'s is absolutely right about the \'low\'process priority of CP app\'s and thus it\'s best to let it run at 100% all the time+ blank the screen-saver (you can watch \'show graphics to see the globe) On the left pane, under your name it says \'Joined Nov22, 2005\' so you\'re not really a new-comer then or what?

The option of setting the CPU usage down is right now in BETA test, and is not in the current running version of BOINC.

I can tell you I have one computer that has been processing DC projects non-stop for over 3 years, and it has not puked on me. I\'ve never had to rebuild the OS, change hardware, nothing. It runs and runs. It is the same computer I surf, e-mail, play games, etc. with. The DC projects never interfered with anything I did on this machine. It\'s a P4 1.8G, 768M RAM, and is a great work horse.

All 6 of my systems that I keep running 24/7 with DC projects never have had a problem.

Good luck, and happy crunching.

Hi Wschwab,

It\'s easiest to reply using the lower-left-hand corner \'reply to this tread\' link, since that doesn\'t pull in loads of rubbish from the previous post.

Hey MikeMarsUK,
What do you mean with \'loads of rubbish from the previous post\' exactly? What rubbish? ;-)
