I just built a new system,
asus p5w dh deluxe
e6400, 1G ram, GeForce 6200 LE
slackware 11.0, kernel 2.4.33.3

getting computation errors, WU runs for 10 or 20 minutes and aborts.
Have tried 4 WUs and all get the same error.
see results:

What is going wrong?

Thanks

Slackware has given issues in the past with this Model. If you give the Board\'s search engine \'slackware\' you can see the discussions.

Hi,
Perhaps, it\'s caused by a problem of permissions (can\'t open the file to write in it). So you could try to check that Boinc is not installed as root user and chmod -Rf 0755 the BOINC folder.

Does it work well with other (heavy) things?
It could be a memory problem since CPDN is very memory intensive.
First thing I would do is to up the voltage a bit on the memory sticks.
Test it with Memtest86+

To cwhyl,
I have tried several other BOINC projects with no problems. I think I will hold off raising the memory voltage.

To [AF>Est>Linux]Arnaud,
My BOINC directory is not owned by \'root\', so I don\'t think there is a permission issue.

Thanks for both suggestions

To astroWX,
Thanks, I found a thread that relates to this. Are there any plans to update the client to the newer glibc library?

John,

I have no knowledge about that, but tend to doubt it. Carl tries to maximize backward compatibility to catch as many participants as possible.

I used to run SuSE Linux on most of my machines (and it\'s still on the boxes) and there were library issues from time to time in Alpha & Beta tests; I think that\'s why Carl uses the libraries he does.

Sorry I can\'t give you better news.

This is a bit sad, I was thinking of moving to Slackware, a bit tired of Fedora.
Well they have a 2.6.x kernel in /extra, could you try that?

Hi,
I have the same problem of John Reeves.

I have tried on 2 Slackware:

Slackware 10.0 (default kernel)

Slackware 10.1 (compiled kernel)

To astroWX,
Thanks, I found a thread that relates to this. Are there any plans to update the client to the newer glibc library?

News?
Where can I download source?
What do I need to compile it?

What source? BOINC? From the BOINC site at UC-Berkeley.

For CPDN? Forget it, it\'s proprietary, licensed from UK Met. Office by Uni. Oxford; we, as participants, have no option to compile the million line Fortran Model.

Calm,
I have joined to CPDN 3 days ago and I was not a lot informed.
I wanted to only try to make to go CPDN on Slack...
I\'ll leave the project and will perhaps resume it when and if the problem will be resolved from who can.

Hi,
The source of Boinc are on the berkeley site: http://boinc.berkeley.edu/compile_client.php (but not very easy to compile if you want the GUI)
There is no source available for the climate model.
The problem with Slackware is not fixed, so it\'s better to change of Linux distro if possible.

I know it, I have already compiled it.

:-(
From a fast reading of the FAQ before join to the project,
me it seemed that nearly all were available...boh

:-(
Usually I use Linux Slackware (principally without X11) and OSX.

Best regards and Thanks for the clear answer.

I\'m sorry for the misunderstanding,
before joining to the project I have read:
http://www.climateprediction.net/info/part_faq.php#q2.8

My English is bad, but I had understood that everybody want to access to CPDN sources to port it to a new platform (OSX Intel for example), to debug or simply to recompile it and be sure that the model is doing what they claim it is doing may access to it at some condition, but free of charge.
However it would remain the problem that probably could not diffuse its improvements and perhaps even the binary for the new platform...

No problem, Gianluca.

This Model is a bear to compile for PCs. It was developed by scientists at the Met Office over two decades and is meant to run on a Cray Supercomputer.

The team at Oxford has a difficult time making a stable PC or MAC version and verifying that proper (valid) results are produced. (If everyone could compile their own version, there would be no way for the scientists at Oxford to know whether the results were valid or not.)

Then, when the Team thinks they have a stable, valid, Model, some of us are sent the compiled version for Alpha, then Beta, tests. After tweaks (fixes) along the way, sometimes several tweaks to \"get it right\", the Staff releases the Models to the world. It\'s a difficult process.

Hope that helps.
