Okay I think I am a small fry in all of this and not all that computer literate, however I am having issues connecting to request new work.

Nothing has been changed in my computer set up or internet connection. Boinic manager won\'t connect. I have tried various combinations in the connections tab and nothing has worked.

The clues are here:
Project communication failed: attempting access to reference site

This means that the Manager tried to get to the project server and failed.
So it\'s going to try and get to the reference site, which is Google. (Assumed to be always available).
Access to reference site failed - check network connection or proxy configuration.

This means that it couldn\'t get to Google either. Now the assumption is that your computer isn\'t connecting to the internet on the 3 ports needed by BOINC.

This may be a firewall problem, or a proxy server problem.
The later is mostly found in commercial networks, rather than in the home, so it\'s probably your firewall.

Ports needed by BOINC:
BOINC.exe needs 31416 and 80 and 443 opened
BOINCmgr.exe needs 31416 opened
BOINC.scr needs 31416 opened

You\'ll have to see what the setings are for whichever firewall you use.
Port 80 will be OK, because that\'s also used by web browsers, and you\'re posting OK here.

All my other network activity is fine and connection to the net is not an issue. I have not changed anything on my PC, that does not mean that IT hasn\'t done it though :(

I have checked the connections in the boinic manager and all looks good there. I thought I connected using a HTTP proxy I have not changed anything. It is set to port 80 and the address field has a proxy address for here at work ( I put that in hoping it would work, and it failed). Is that correct. Should the address field have something different in it ?? I have now checked my seti details and it seems I don\'t connect via a proxy so have left all those fields blank (i.e set them up the same way seti is set up). I still seem to have the problem.

okay just tried to attach seti to boinc, failed as well, so somethinghas happened somewhere.

mmm can\'t seem to find the issue out. Might end up just canning the whole lot I think.

Windows monthly update is known to reset the Windows firewall settings, as do some combined firewall/virus checkers. ZoneAlarm for instance.
Which is why I suggested checking the settings.

There is a thread here on our other board about firewall settings.

Thanks for the link.

I have checked and the windows firewall is not running. Our network does use a Symantec Antivirus and when I double click on the icon I am unable to make any changes (everything is ghosted) probably so people like me don\'t do silly things.

Pretty much have no idea now when it comes to this stuff, so I think I really am going to have to bail from the whole shebang. :(

Have you looked at the rules of CPDN (and most projects):

License Agreement

To participate in the experiment you must agree to abide by the licence agreement.

Run climateprediction.net only on authorised computers

Run climateprediction.net only on computers that you own, or for which you have obtained the owner\'s permission. Some companies and schools have policies that prohibit using their computers for projects such as climateprediction.net.

Organizations put protective software on to block the use of products they do not understand. Many have fired people over unauthorized software installs.

Yep, have read the rules and also spoken to IT many times on the project, they also participate in different things. They said it was fine a few years back when I started running the orig seti at a different location.

I also asked them about 3 weeks ago (after a question from the boss) if our policy has changed and was it all still okay. Answer was YES, no problem.

I will wait another couple of days and ask our IT guy when he comes in from leave. At this stage I am at a loss to explain why I no longer able to connect after the 22nd December.
