Well, if the screensaver is on public display and may bring new recruits to this or any other boinc project, I\'d say that\'s a good thing! You can see the % of CPU time the screensaver uses by looking at the processes in Task manager. You know, I just do not understand why you are negative toward the screensavers. All of them are really beautiful. Some really talented folks made them. And even if you are losing some percentage of my capacity, 30% or what ever else, you are after all, getting the rest of it, what? 70%? That\'s some crunching that you did not have. They are, you know, my computers. I now have my two Vista machines up on three projects. I would put my XP machines on also, but I don\'t think they are up to your standards. They are PIII, CPU\'s around a gig, 512megs of DRAM. So, sorry if you are displeased, but that\'s how it is. >>RSM |

Hi again Mitrichr I hope nobody\'s displeased - I\'m certainly not. My posts must sound much more prescriptive than I intended them to. This advice we often give about screensavers is based on the following: *Many members prefer to process the model as fast as possible *Many of them prefer to use as little electricity per model as possible *The globe can still be seen using the graphics window in boinc manager *On some computers, using the screensaver can make graphics problems more likely But you may consider other factors more important. You\'ve obviously thought about this and come to an informed decision. And yes, the screensaver is very attractive indeed. Regarding slower computers, have a look at what I said a few hours ago here: http://climateapps2.oucs.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc/forum_thread.php?id=5560 If you decide that the current very long climate model is unsuitable for these computers, keep an eye on the cpdn News thread (get to it through my sig). We hope that shorter models will become available maybe later this year, and we\'ll announce them there. Cpdn news |

Don\'t let them get you down. I have most of my computers set up to display the screensaver at the login screen as well as when I\'m logged in, then go to blank after some time. While CPDN does use a significant amount of the CPU to run the screensaver most projects use more of the graphics card (assuming it is openGL compliant), for example using SETI\'s screensaver only adds about 1% to crunch times. Hi, thanks, yes, I am keeping at it, just thrilled that since I began crunching my computers are doing something worthwhile. I mean, my biggest interest is music, streaming, ripping, recording, you know, entertainment. So, I feel better about my computer life. Thank you all. >>RSM |
