I\'ve not been able to upload trickles for a few days now. I\'ve enabled the following flags in my cc_config.xml: <cc_config> <log_flags> <task>1</task> <file_xfer>1</file_xfer> <sched_ops>1</sched_ops> <proxy_debug>1</proxy_debug> <http_debug>1</http_debug> <http_xfer_debug>1</http_xfer_debug> </log_flags> <options> </options> </cc_config> Here\'s the log message I\'m getting, any ideas? Hmmm, don\'t know why no-one has answered you Edward, hope someone will soon! I believe there was a temporary problem with the server yesterday and there still seems to be something odd today because some very strange messages are appearing on the top teams listing - so maybe the problem is there rather than with you. Hope you get it sorted soon though. Visit the Scotland team |

15/02/2007 10:44:04||Project communication failed: attempting access to reference site When boinc fails in server connection attempts, it tries to find the \"reference\" site -- an open Internet site that should always be available. That suggests something askew in your (formidable!) machine. Any changes/updates to the firewall about the time the problem started? Edit: Liberated this from one of Les\' posts (thanks Les): Ports needed by BOINC: BOINC.exe needs 31416 and 80 and 443 opened BOINCmgr.exe needs 31416 opened BOINC.scr needs 31416 opened "We have met the enemy and he is us." -- Pogo Greetings from coastal Washington state, the scenic US Pacific Northwest. |

Hi I still have the problem, but I also get messages like this in my log: 16/02/2007 10:14:07||Access to reference site succeeded - project servers may be temporarily down. Thus the client is accessing google ok. I know our proxy / firewall supports port 80 & 443 as destination ports, but I\'d be very surprised if I can use port 31416 as a destination, it is quite restrictive. I can\'t tell you if the firewall configuration has changed. I\'ll keep processing for a few days. If this problem really persists, this dual Xeon will have to stop processing 24/7, which would be a real pity. I\'m still processing at home on a Core 2 Duo however. Regards, e (sorry for the duplicate post before, newbie problems) |

Port 31416 is used for internal communication between the BOINC manager and the BOINC daemon, and also for remote management of other instances of BOINC on other machines in a LAN. It isn\'t used for communication with project servers. So port 31416 may need to be opened in software firewalls on home PCs, or when running multiple machines locally - but it only needs opening for the local LAN segmant. There should be no need to open it on the sort of \'corporate perimeter\' firewall you\'re talking about. |

Hi Thanks for the reply. I did have the XP software firewall enabled, but as an experiment I disabled it an retried the transfer to no avail. That said I don\'t think it was blocking things running over the loopback adapter. I\'m a software developer and frequently use various ports over loopback without any configuration being required. So... it\'s something else. I\'m guessing the perimeter firewall. There\'s no means to manually upload the trickle data? e |

I\'ve just changed my proxy configuration to use another proxy, and successfully uploaded the trickle data. The configuration must have changed for the original proxy. So that\'s the end of that problem. 4 x hadcm3 models @ 9% and counting... Finally, how can it say 400 hours ~= 9% of 2834 hours (i.e. 2434 to go)? If it\'s done 9% in 400 hours, surely the total will be over 4000 hours? Does the speed vary? Is this a miscalculation due to hyperthreading? - I have two single core HT CPUs. Another question, with 1MB L2 cache with a single core Netburst architecture CPU, is it better to run two models in parallel per processor chip or not? HT will use the processing units more efficiently, but I imagine CPDN is pretty heavy with L2 cache usage. I\'m also beta-testing the Mac client, is there a way to merge my (alas two) user accounts? e |

I\'m glad that you got it sorted. 1) No, there\'s no way of manually sending back data. 2) Apparently the time to completion is a 2 part calc, and is never very accurate for this project because of the long work units. You can work it out manually by timing trickles, or just make a guess. 3) The models are heavy on any ram it can get. Cache is good, but it\'s not enough. If you want to run 2 models on an HT machine, you\'ll get a bit better than \"twice as long\", but it will depend on ..... 4a) 2 accounts = 2 people. Merging would involve you providing absolute proof to a computer program that you(1) are the same person as you(2). So it\'s not a possibility. 4b) If you\'re talking about an account here on the main project, and an account on the beta test site, again, no. They are, in effect, 2 different projects. But your credits from the beta site are \"mentioned in despatches\" on your Account page here. |

Hi No problem with the two accounts really, my goal is to contribute, not to gain stats. So running 4 models on 2 single-core HT processors is valid, it\'ll give greater throughput than 2 models. The box has 2GB of RAM, only ~350MB is being used by CPDN and total usage for all processes rarely tops 1.2GB. I could be the the Mac beta is using a better compiler, but I\'ve noticed a 2.33GHz Core 2 Duo (Merom) is doing 1/2 as much work in 1/3rd the time (i.e. it\'s 1.5x faster) than dual 3.6GHz single-core HT Netburst Xeons. e |

FWIW: The Beta uses ~91% less HD I/O because it sucks temp files into RAM. Couple that with the compiled test code being slick as glass on Core 2 Duo. (I have a 2.4GHz C2D running a Beta and a regular 5.15 Model [box is not overclocked]. The 5.15 Model runs at 1.52 s/TS, the Beta runs at 1.03 s/TS.) Unfortunately, P4, Pentium-D, and AMD get much less benefit from the same compile. Pleased to see that your problem is solved.
