I\'ve got a PowerPC Mac Mini that I\'m thinking of installing a version of linux on. Does anyone know if I can compile BOINC and CPDN to run on, say, Gentoo PPC linux? I used gentoo for a year or so on X86 going back a few years and I\'m aware that it uses the download and compile model for most software. Are there gentoo packages available for cpdn models - there does appear to be one for boinc itself?

2) When you compile BOINC for Linux, it MUST end up with the same name as that on the cpdn download page.
Hover your mouse pointer over the Linux package, and look at the bottom of your screen to get the syntax of the Linux package.

Which flavour of Linux you run doesn\'t matter much, but some co-operate better with BOINC/cpdn than others. And Slackware doesn\'t seem to work at all.

Well, as I said, it\'s a PowerPC Mac Mini, not an Intel. Any possibility of compiling an executable from source? I mean the climate model executable, rather than BOINC, which is available for Gentoo on the PowerPC, as far as I am aware. Probably not, I guess - I can imagine that the people that process the data might be a bit paranoid about something like that...

Not a chance.

To start with, it\'s owned by the Met Office.
Next up, it\'s a million plus lines of fortran, and the compiler options chosen have a big effect on the model\'s results, which is why each new program version is tested for weeks before being released. (This is happening now with the next version.)

Program versions were available for the \'old\' Macs, but the science code couldn\'t be made to give consistant results with the models that followed slab, and these computers were dropped from the supported list back in 2005.

\"PowerPC Mac\" is just a couple of words to me; I\'ve no idea what type they are.

SETI and SIMAP are the only BOINC based projects which supports Linux on PPC. - For MacOS on PPC are a lot of more projects with have supported applications.
