By the way, I think it happens automatically and most people don't seem to pay much attention to it but team Scotland has had several fairly recent Users of the Day in CPDN - Dave McK in November, Derek and Graham in December and John Cropley in January. None of them still crunching, though still registered with the team.

Just a reminder that all you need to do to be in the running for User of the Day is to create a "profile" in this project (see "Participant profiles" on the menu at the left of this page) - which doesn't need to give away any personal information.

PS: annoyingly, I find I'm having to log in to this page every time, despite my instruction to "remember me on this computer" :-(

Do you use Firefox? I have the same issue these days. The Firefox option to remember passwords is also greyed-out by default now -- and I haven't found a way to activate it. (It seems that a recent release hit some features, probably for security reasons.)

My Firefox was on 26.0 until yesterday, and it's now 27.0

I'm still logged in.

I dont know if this project uses them, but, many websites recognize computers by inserting a cookie into your computer. The problem is that many antivirus programs remove these cookies. I have this problem with my bank. Every time I try to log-in I have to go through the banks authentication procedures. I have not been able to figure out how to stop this.

I'm glad I have to log in afresh to my bank every time. Otherwise if a cookie logged you in and the computer was stolen the thief would be able to get straight into your bank account.

But I find that with Windows cookies keep me logged into all my project and forum accounts. Except yesterday when I used Windows Disk Cleanup to have a total clean sweep; I now find myself logged out of a lot of sites, though not all.

Thanks for all the helpful suggestions, folks. I do use Firefox for some things but have always used IE (currently IE9, with which I've always had some problems and they seem to be increasing) to access the various CPDN-related sites.

I'm familiar with the prob of cookies being deleted when I clear out my temporary internet files and that's fair enough but I haven't done that recently. And I do think it's quite right that a bank should require you to log in every time. But it's slightly irritating in a forum like this when I keep telling it to remember me on this computer!

Even with the cookie in place my bank still requires me to log-in with a user name and password. Without the cookie I have to request an email from the bank, which goes to the email address on file with them, and contains a one time pass-code that I have to enter. This registers the computer (and sets a new cookie) until such time as the next antivirus scan removes the cookie.

I just wish that I could tell my antivirus program to leave the bank cookie alone.

Wow, we seem to have acquired 3 MORE new members since I last looked, but I'm not entirely sure who they are - perhaps Iansm can cast some light, if he's around? One is definitely Jane, who joined the project earlier this month and has since joined our team. So a very warm team Scotland welcome to Jane and I hope she'll come say hello either here or in the Scottish forum - happy crunching meantime ;-)

Partly as a result of the new team members joining, team Scotland has now passed 80,000,000 credits in CPDN alone - well done all!

Team Scotland is currently in 20th position worldwide in RAC (recent average credit) and 19th in total credit - great work by our wee team ;-) My computer has just finished a task and is downloading a new one - I've lost track of how many models I've completed now (I do miss Iansm's great team statistics).

My little bit is a drop in the ocean compared to some of our major crunchers, but I know that every contribution helps the project.

Welcome to another new team member, thunderbird30, who joined both the project and team Scotland earlier today ;-). It's not always easy to spot new team members, unless we just happen to look at the team list on the day they join. So I hope anyone who hasn't been welcomed (at least two recently) will please forgive us! And a warm team Scotland welcome to thunderbird30 - thank you for joining and happy crunching!

Sorry haven't been in here for a bit - so busy! But my computer has just completed another task and started a new one - no idea how many I've completed now, I do miss iansm's great team statistics :-(

And team Scotland is in 19th position in RAC today, as well as in total credit. Keep up the good work, folks!

It's quite a while since team Scotland had a User of the Day in any of the climate projects but congratulations to Ray Murray on being today's User of the Day in Climate@Home.

The reason why Ray and Ian are Users of the Day more often than the rest of us is not only because they both "crunch" in a lot of different projects but also because they make a point of creating a "profile" in each project - it's easy to do (see Participant profiles in the menu to the left of this page) and you don't have to include a photograph or say anything personal.

I've had a few UOTDs recently; POGS and Constellation in Feb, T4T in March and Pirates and Climate@Home so far in May. I was Climate UOTD for about 3 months as, being a new project, there aren't many profiles to choose from and the Admin there is a one-man-band and many things get done manually.
My 5 UOTDs before joining the team (7 years ago !) don't count toward the Team total of 150.
You can leave most of a profile blank or fill in as much as you want then just copy/paste to any other projects you participate in. You don't even have to be active on a project to be chosen; it's totally random. I've been picked on projects I haven't contributed to for ages.

I've not done much here for a while but I did catch a few of the Flooding models.
I've been concentrating on Climate and have been promoted to Moderator/Tester there for no obvious reason other than replying to some posts from others and providing feedback on whether their models work properly, or not. I'm no.1 in the UK there 8)
Most of the time my 2 machines, with a couple of Virtual Machines running Linux within the laptop, are concentrating on T4T, and LHC when work is available.

Oh dear, what a long time since I've been here - just soooo busy! Nice to see you, Ray, and thanks for the update and your continuing support for the team. We're still going great guns, even though only about 20 of us are currently active in CPDN, and are holding our position at 19th worldwide in total credits. The team RAC (recent average credit) fluctuates somewhat, so we're usually just outside the top 20 for that, but occasionally make it onto the front page of the teams list for that too. Well done everyone, keep on crunching! ;-)

Members of our team rarely get selected as User of the Day, because hardly any of us create a "profile" in any BOINC project. It's easy to do (click on Participant Profiles in the menu to the left of this page) and you don't have to include any personal info. Congratulations to Ray Murray for being named User of the Day in Climate@Home on 1 August.

Just noticed that it's 10 years ago tomorrow that I joined CPDN in the pre-Boinc days with my "Classic" cobblestones still listed on my account page. That was on a self-built 250MHz, single core machine with 128MB and a 10GB disk. Whole thing cost about 300 to build with various upgrades along the way until it was finally retired when I couldn't upgrade it further. Not built a system for a long time having moved onto laptops but you could probably do a reasonable system with 3 more cores at 10 times the speed, 30 times the memory and a disk 50 or more times bigger for the same money today.

Hi, and congratulations, Ray. It's nice to see early participants still hanging-in with the project -- through thick-n-thin.

Your icon, part of Carl Sagan-designed gold disks on Voyager 1 & 2 spacecraft, brings to mind COSMOS' second series, narrated by Neil deGrasse Tyson. If you haven't seen it, I suspect you will enjoy it.

The new series has many parallels with Carl Sagan's series but with updated data and viewpoints. Parallels are understandable because many of the same names appear in the credits as were in the original series, beginning with Sagan's wife, Ann Druyan. (I found the series sufficiently different and well-done that I bought a DVD copy. [No, I don't have a financial interest the project!])

By the way, if you encounter interviews or panels with Dr. Tyson on You Tube, they too, are worth a look. He isn't a dry 'academic' person. He combines science with humor.

Hi Space Weather,
You beat me here by 2 days, the first day of CPDN, so many belated happy returns to you and the Project too.
I'm surprised there hasn't been acknowledgement or celebration of this anniversary but there can't be many left from those days other than project staff and even some of them will have moved on so maybe nobody has noticed. A quick random sample of low ID numbers shows nearly all zero recent credit, not even Boincing at all. I somehow found the BBC CPDN project before it opened up to the public and had an ID there of 26.

I've been concentrating on LHC work recently and the new(ish) Climate@home project using Virtual Machines so didn't notice the new applications over on the Beta site.

I do remember being fascinated by the original Carl Sagan series and I've just found the new series is to air in the UK on the National Geographic channel. Unfortunately I only get Freeview so I'll not get to see it unless it maybe gets to BBC4 sometime.
I'll be following news on the Rosetta comet mission and the Planetary Society's Light Sail.
