Cryz,

apparently BOINC 4.05 does not support NT4.

Hi Cryz,

Error -144 indicates that the CPDN programs have failed to create the shared memory file they require. The nature of the error shouldn't cause a workunit to be invalidated because it's a startup error rather than a processing one, so by resetting the project (or detahing and reattaching) all that you're doing is using up some of your system's daily quota of 4 WUs.

The only ways that I've reliably made the error appear are:

1) by trying to run the GUI and CLI programs at the same time. The second one to start up generates the error every time.

2) by running 2 instances of the CLI program from different directories (you can't run 2 from the same directory because it creates a lockfile). The GUI program seems to prevent you from starting a second instance by detecting when there's an instance already running.

3) by killing the BOINC process (GUI or CLI). But I wouldn't advise trying that without taking a backup of your installation directory first. The CPDN processes continue running and you get the error every time you restart BOINC. Killing the CPDN processes without restoring the backup will almost certainly result in model trashing when you restart BOINC.

Thanks Thyme Lawn, I think it's something close to number 3 because:
Boinc was first running fine when I put it in suspend
some time later I choose file, exit (Called closing Boinc, not killing I believe)
When I restarted Boinc (No pc restart) the CPDN processes was still running, given the error, also giving an error when Detaching from CPDN
But why did I still get the error after killing CPDN (taskmanager), deleting the directory and re-attaching?

Hi Cryz,

I don't think my third scenario can apply when you do a normal exit. By killing BOINC I meant ending the process from task manager to simulate the program crashing. When you do a normal exit of BOINC it should always close the CPDN programs before terminating, which means you shouldn't be getting that particular error.

Assuming that the CPDN programs are using standard Windows APIs, the only way a get shared memory error should happen is if the shared memory file mapping already exists. So either BOINC has somehow managed to leave the CPDN program running (you'll be able to check that using task manager) or something else has created a shared memory file mapping with the same name.
