Message 31757 - Posted: 17 Dec 2007, 16:30:09 UTC

I\'m getting the following message:

12/17/2007 11:26:17 AM|climateprediction.net|Message from server: Not enough disk space (only 506.0 MB free for BOINC). Review preferences for maximum disk space used.

I have over 21 Gigs available on Drive C and 31 Gigs available on Drive D:.

Any suggestions?

Thanks.

If you go to \'Your account\', \'General preferences\', what are the disk space usage settings?

(For comparison, mine are : Use at most 100GB, Leave at least 1GB, Use at most 75%)

I increased the values and updated Bonic. Unfortunately, that didn\'t work. So, I\'ve dumped ClimatePrediction altogether.

Oh well.

It\'s just as well for CPDN when crunchers leave if they haven\'t got the patience to stick around to sort out a problem even when they get the first response after only 40 minutes.

A pity for up2long though because he\'s missed the opportunity to have the other problem explained and probably resolved.

The disk space issue will also affect his other projects eventually, since the settings above are shared by all projects.

Rather a lot of crashed models too.

The \'README - crashes and other problems\' post contains a list of links to useful posts about resolving crashes. The other README files are worthwhile reading as well. Perhaps \'patience\' should be listed on the requirements page? :-)

Hello,

I have the exact same problem than the first user.
My limits are 100Gb, 50% at most, but I have the same message: enough space disk.

And it is not affecting other projects, they continue to download and run.

Also, it has been months without a work with climate prediction, and still it takes 400Mb.

any idea?

thks

To start with, the 7 models that have crashed will be taking up disk space.

Write down the name of the working model, and then delete all of the folders under: climateprediction.net with model names that AREN\'T this one.

You may not be getting more because:
A) You don\'t have the disk space, and
B) BOINC may be in \"pay back\" mode, giving time to your other projects to balance up the extra time previously given to climateprediction.
All normal proceedures.

*sigh* with an attitude like yours you will lose even more support.

I am no longer running your application because of the continuing problems it produces. It wasn\'t just over one problem that you still haven\'t resolved for other users.

Maybe, when this model is working much better in the future I\'ll offer you my FREE assistance again.

Though, with a repsone you posted I doubt it.

For someone no longer running the project, you\'re returning a lot of trickles.

Hi Notme

The moderators and other helpers on the CPDN forums also donate our time and resources, unlimited and free. We help with problems until we reach some sort of resolution, however long it takes. In many cases more than one problem is involved or a single problem could have several causes. In order to achieve resolution it is therefore necessary not only for the moderators to keep responding, but also for the crunchers presenting with problems to have the patience to stick around and keep posting.

If you would like us to help sort out the problems (presumably still including disk space?) could you please tell us the details of your disk space usage settings in your general preferences.

When the disk space problem is sorted out we can offer some specific advice about avoiding model crashes.

Thankyou. I noticed during the week that CPDN wasn\'t running (leaving just SETI) and when I looked I had 41 folders of models that weren\'t running. I\'ve deleted them and CPDN is now downloading a new model.

Question. We can\'t be the only ones with a similar problem. Why doesn\'t CPDN tidyup the mess?

Someone has already added this to the Wish List (here). It\'s a good idea, since it must surely be possible to mark folders for deletion based on fatal errors as well as successes. This won\'t get rid of all orphaned folders, as some failed models never report their status to the servers - however, it would be a start.

If you\'ve got friends in high places, perhaps you could encourage them to award grants to CPDN to implement the wish list! as it is, the team are pretty much occupied just keeping the whole thing going - and implement science applications. It would be nice if they had more resources, but they don\'t.

Some CPDN members can easily tidy up their own mess of CPDN remnants. If you only have one CPDN model running on a computer (maybe together with tasks from other projects), before the model finishes you can set CPDN to No New Tasks in the BOINC manager Projects tab. AFTER the model has uploaded its final zip file AND REPORTED TO THE SERVER you can click the Reset button, only for CPDN. This will clear out all remnants of old files. Then click Allow New Tasks to get a new model.

The Reset button mustn\'t be used while a model is in progress. You\'d lose the model and would have to restore a backup to get the model back. This method can\'t be used if you have more than one model running on a computer.

I also have problems with that the project runs out of disk space. I have now increased the maximum size that Climateprediction.net can use to 5GB. Is it enough?

Greetings!

Hi Bjrn

That\'s enough for most cases, but you\'re had several failures, and a few that have been abandoned.
Deleting the folders for these models will free up some space.

It also depends on how much is being used by the other projects.

BOINC currently doesn\'t know what the project application plans to use for the next model, in order to reduce downloads. It does not have a reference counter that would allow to delete files that are not referenced anymore.

But I see on your profile : Joined: Sep 3 04

CPDN has changed the storage behaviour a lot since then.

Earlier CPDN versions kept all successful models for the case, that the scientists would have needed them. I usually moved those to a different partition, so they didn\'t count in the BOINC used space anymore.

The newer program versions do not do that anymore, they usually clean up.

Björn, check that your model graphics haven\'t accidentally got the recording turned on. Click on View graphics in Boinc Manager Tasks, press Z then 8 to see all the graphics details, then H for the menu. Recording the graphics uses lots of space and for most people isn\'t necessary.

I don\'t think it\'s worth saving data from old CPDN Classic models now, but if you have any of these they won\'t be in your BOINC folder.

My BOINC folder occupies about 1.4GB space and my CPDN about 150MB. That doesn\'t include BOINC folder backups which I keep on an external disk. Quad-cores and computers attached to lots of projects will have more.

When you\'re reaching the end of the last CPDN model on a computer (or the end of tasks for any other project) in the BOINC Manager Projects tab you can set that project to No new Tasks. Then when the last task has completed and reported to the server you can highlight that project and click Reset. This deletes all the old files and remnants of completed tasks. Of course we mustn\'t do this for any project with tasks in progress. You can then click Allow New Tasks to get a new model.

I think the only thing we should save is the 2 or 3 most recent backups of the current BOINC folder so that if the model(s) in progress crash, they can be restored and continued. But these backups will always be outside the BOINC folder.

Mike, I just tried to change my preferences to what you suggest (I\'m getting the same \"Not Enough Disk Space\" error and I\'m getting the following error:
\"Unable to update preferences. The values marked in red below were out of range or not numeric.\"

The problem is nothing is marked in red. However, there are two fields, Maximum download rate and Maximum upload rate are empty. Is there something I\'m not doing that I need to be?
Thanks.
