In the run-time message my PC incountered (like the original poster), it was a write to unit 8. The file path and name was C:\\Program files\\BOINC\\projects\\climateprediction.net\\hadsm3fub_jjy2_005943981\\tmp\\pipe_dummy On my PC, that file exists as a zero-length file. Also, on a different work unit today, I noticed a message in the message tab from climateprediction.net something like \"failed to initialize DLL\" and \"if this recurs, reboot your computer\". So, I rebooted. My desktop system is not rebooted often. Also, the PC uses climateprediction.net and another BOINC project. |

... The \'failed to initialize DLL\' message is misleading. There used to be a message called \'Exited with zero status and no result file\', but due to a bug in the Boinc client from around 5.10 onwards, the DLL message appears instead. A rather simple bug : if (result_code = 2) () rather than if (result_code == 2) {} It has been fixed in the V6 branch (which is not yet ready for release), but for some reason has not been fixed in the V5 branch. The Boinc core client is maintained by Berkeley. The meaning of \'Exited with zero status...\' is that the science app exited, but without setting the \'completed\' flag. The most common reason for this is the system time sync - when setting the clock backwards, even by a few milliseconds, Boinc forces all the science apps to close down for a moment. I\'ve modified my time sync to only happen once per week. I'm a volunteer and my views are my own. News and Announcements and FAQ |

I have been getting a similar error box message for about a week. I click on \'OK\' and the model appears to continue to run. I think it occurs when the screensaver kicks in, the timing is about right. The actual message is: Visual Fortran run-time error forrtl: severe (24): end-of-file during read, unit 20, file C:\\Program Files\\BOINC\\projects\\climateprediction.net\\hadsm3fub_jjk7_005943482\\fort.20 Image PC Routine Line Source hadsm3_se_5.06_wi 005459E2 Unknown Unknown Unknown hadsm3_se_5.06_wi 00542C74 Unknown Unknown Unknown hadsm3_se_5.06_wi 004EABDE Unknown Unknown Unknown hadsm3_se_5.06_wi 004EA7FB Unknown Unknown Unknown hadsm3_se_5.06_wi 004DEC09 Unknown Unknown Unknown hadsm3_se_5.06_wi 0043FA75 _read_pp_header 5421 pptoanc1.f hadsm3_se_5.06_wi 004398fb _anc_fld 2381 pptoanc1.f hadsm3_se_5.06_wi 00437DCB _pptoanc 981 pptoanc1.f hadsm3_se_5.06_wi 004034DA Unknown Unknown Unknown hadsm3_se_5.06_wi 004031F3 Unknown Unknown Unknown hadsm3_se_5.06_wi 00531C4B Unknown Unknown Unknown kernel32.dll 7C816FD7 Unknown Unknown Unknown I am also running another application under BOINC that doesn\'t appear to have any problems. I also am running another PC with the same basic setup, but ClimatePrediction.net isn\'t getting an error on that PC. Any ideas on what is causing this and how to eliminate it? |

forrtl: severe (24): end-of-file during read, unit 20, file C:\\Program Files\\BOINC\\projects\\climateprediction.net\\hadsm3fub_jjk7_005943482\\fort.20 hadsm3_se only runs during the end of phase post-processing for slab models and \'fort.20\' is used a temporary file. It looks like there was a problem with the data it\'s created from that caused it to be shorter than expected. ... On my system kaspersky-antivirus ist running an because of network-preferences i´m not allowed to exclude my BOINC-folder or subfolders. If the BOINC folders cannot be excluded, then it is possible to use the BOINC Manager preferences (i.e. \'processor usage\') to suspend the model during the period when the anti-virus application does a scan. That may help. |

I just reset the project each time it does this. I suspect other users just dump the project or shrug. This relationship is supposed to be lightweight on our part. I read this is i/o errors, access conflicts, boinc, time sync, etc., some postings explaining log messages that are not related. Don\'t you think it\'s time for a FAQ, if not a fix? |

I have been receiving the same error sporadically for the last week. As I started writing this, the error popped up 5 times in 10 seconds. I have a desktop Vista home premium. I am running latest version of BOINC. CPDN and World Community Grid are the only 2 clients that are running. My power setting is for \'high performance. Computing preferences set preferentially high for CPDN. Examining test manager, my active BOINC clients are the only tasks using the processor. I did however, see a stray hadcm3transum project sitting in memory but not using any processor time, that was not one of the currently active CPDN projects. My monitor is using \'photos\' screen saver. |

Hello I have been getting this same kind of message (error 38, kernel32) for a few days. I have successfully crunched one task before, without any message. Nothing has changed on my system, but I did change one thing in the BOINC options: I told it to suspend calculations instead of calculating all the time, although I am not sure the error appeared exactly when I changed this option or if this is a coincidence. I am using XP Home SP3, Avira AntiVir PE and Outpost Firewall on an ASUS laptop. No Messenger, the laptop is just standing idle, and I am not using any screen saver (Boinc or other). When I set the calculation mode to Idle, the message seems to reappear each time calculations resume, but strangely the message box closes itself as soon as I move the mouse pointer. If I change the calculation mode back to continuous, the error appears even more frequently and I have to close it manually. Another strange thing is that Boinc seems to be trickling, as if the error dd not stop calculations. Update: I rebooted the laptop, restarted Boinc in continuous mode and the error disappeared. I switched back to idle mode and still got no error... Frederic |

I am having the same error on another HP machine, I wonder if this mainly happens on HP machines |

No, it\'s not unique to HP. This morning I\'ve started seeing the same Fortran error. This particular machine I put together with off-the-shelf parts - Asus MB, AMD64 - processor running Windows XP Home Edition. I was researching the error in the forum which is how I came across this thread. From what I gather, this isn\'t a problem in terms of completing the taks, right? The message tab doesn\'t indicate any sort of problem and the tasks suspend and resume like they should. I\'ll do a reboot shortly and see if I get the error again. Jack |

... From what I gather, this isn\'t a problem in terms of completing the taks, right? ... ... it depends. The error indicates that something is interfering with the normal running of the climate model. So long as the model stops and restarts then it will eventually complete, though some processing time will have been lost at each restart. However, whatever is causing the problem may also deny the model the resources it needs to run at all or at an important time (e.g. file saving or reading) - and the model may crash. Iain |

Hi, Also getting follwoing errors lately very often. My task at 44.127%. Inever oncountered this error before but lately I\'m getting this erroe very often and I had to suspend Climateprediction. The error mentioned in the Message log you posted is a separate issue to Fortran errors, and is covered in the README posts here. exited with zero status is in Crashes and other problems, 4th one down. It\'s possible that the work you\'re doing is causing the model to be interrupted too often. Try Suspending BOINC while you work, or use the option in your Prefs, Suspend work while computer is in use?. Set this to yes, and then set BOINC to Run based on preferences As for Fortran problems, no one has been able to work out why this happens to some computers, on some occasions. It\'s possible that not running the model while you\'re running other programs may help with this as well. Backups: Here |

Hi Stealth Eagle Your model appears to have crashed just after you posted about it. Whether or not that was related to the visual-fortran message I don\'t know because the 22 exit code is so general that it could mean almost anything. I see you haven\'t got a new model yet. If you have a backup you could restore it, tolerate the popup warning while the model finishes, then reset CPDN after completion. If you aren\'t going to restore a backup I think you should reset CPDN before getting a new model. This popup warning could mean a corrupted file, in which case a reset may clear the problem up. Apologies for the delay in replying. Cpdn news |

I've started getting this error as well within the last week. Always: "forrtl: sever (17): syntax error in NAMELIST input, unit 5, file c:\Program Files\BOINC\projects\climateprediction.net\<project #>\jobs\climate.cpdc, line 393, position 19" Running 64-bit 7.2.42, can provide more info if needed. |
