Hi as "Doris and Jens" links' show, you will want to open up "Terminal" on your Mac and run CPDN/BOINC from there. There will be a "normal" Mac program in the future.

Here is a step by step for Mac

1. Place "boinc_4.02_powerpc-apple-darwin" in a folder (directory) wherever you like.
2. Open a terminal window. When the prompt shows, type CD and then drag the folder into the terminal window. (this will complete the path) Hit return.
3. You will need to make the application executable so type chmod +x boinc_4.02_powerpc-apple-darwin. Hit return. Now you can run the program.
4. At the prompt type ./boinc_4.02_powerpc-apple-darwin (note you can shorten the name of the program to something easier to type) Hit return.
5. It will now start up and ask you for the URL and your account ID. Once you have entered those you will be up and running.

You can copy and paste in the URL and account ID, but make sure you don't have any extra spaces at the beginning or end.

&gt; FAQ by Paul D. Buck</a>

I've looked at the references Jens left (thank you!). They lead eventually back to info about SETI@home -- which I have been running successfully for quite a while. But I have not yet gotten the climateprediction setup working.

Mac OSX, Powerbook G3, 900mhz (that's an aftermarket CPU); 1024 mb RAM, 24 GB free on the hard drive. I realize this may just not work -- beta testing, so I suppose that it may work, even though a faster G4 would be better.

I got as far as: opening from the command line in Terminal, after having logged in with my web browser (Firefox) to set personal Preferences -- setting for 10GB hard drive space to use and to keep half the available drive space free.

I've mailed crash logs to climateprediction help.

But I'm wondering -- is SETI@home a possible conflict? I realize SETI@home must have installed a version of Boinc somewhere, under some name -- but I have no idea. Should I try uninstalling SETI@home, to be able to run the climateprediction beta test?

NOTE, I'll be offline five days (botany fieldwork, my outdoor hobby) so no rush, I just wanted to toss this question in before going offline. Since I don't have the beta running, I'll take the computer with me this time.

For OS X 10.3.xx

1/ Create a folder (in Applications), call it BOINC/CPDN, for other projects create a seperate folder and call them BOINC/(project name)

2/ Download program file to desktop (Safari browser will auto unpack it). Drag and drop file to created folder.

3/ Open a Terminal window. (Applications/Utilities/Terminal.)

4/ In the drop down menu under Terminal, go to 'Window setting/processes' and set 'prompt before closing window' to 'always'. Lodge Terminal in the Dock.

5/ In Terminal type cd and put a space, then drag and drop the folder to the terminal window and then hit enter.

6/ In the terminal window type chmod +x and then open project folder and drag and drop project program file to Terminal window and hit enter.

Program should then launch. Follow on screen instructions.

Use 3/ to 6/ if you have to close Terminal window.

If you miss out the registering of the Folder, your project files will be all over the place.

Usage: Within the program file there are a number of commands that can be executed.

These are:-

-version show version info.
-show_projects show attached projects.
-detach_project URL detach from a project.
-reset_project URL reset (clear) a project.
-attach_project attach to a project (will prompt for URL, account key)
-update_prefs URL contact a project to update preferences.
-run_cpu_benchmarks run the CPU benchmarks

Use 3/ to 6/ and type the command after the executable before you press 'return'

&gt; I am having a similar problem. I have downloaded BOINC but then I used stuffit
&gt; as the default application to unpack BOINC. However this does not work saying
&gt; it is not compressed or decoded? What can I do to remedy this? Thanks!

well the Mac version isn't very "user friendly" and is only for OSX 10.3, but what you need to do:

1) download the BOINC client (it will be a file named boinc_4.05_powerpc-apple-darwin.gz) to the directory/folder of your choice (i.e. should have a gig free for CPDN/BOINC), a subdir of your "Home" directory is nice, let's call it "boinc" for this example

2) open up a "Terminal" in OSX 10.3, and "cd boinc" to the directory you hopefully put boinc_4.05*.gz in

3) gzip -d boinc_*.gz

4) chmod uog+rx boinc*

5) ./boinc*

6) here you should get prompts, enter climateprediction.net and your authenticator key

7) press return and it will do benchmarks, connect and download, and hopefully in a few minutes run the model (you'll see the timesteps go by)

8) if you've made it through 7), and you see the timesteps go by but would like something more visual, assuming you're in the "boinc" directory do a:

cd projects/climateprediction.net
./viz

and hopefully you will see graphics of your world. If you are on a dual-processor G5 running two models at once, you can pass a command-line argument which is the workunit name, i.e. ./viz 0343_100043243

&gt;boinc_4.05_powerpc-apple-darwin without the .gz at the end of the file

OK that's better, then copy the boinc_4.05* (without .gz) to wherever you want to run boinc (i.e. a new folder), open "Terminal" and "cd" to that folder, run "chmod ug+rx boinc_*" from the command-line in the Terminal, and then execute "./boinc*" (all without the " marks of course). Then the boinc prompts should come up.

&gt; Hi Carl,
&gt;
&gt; Yes have tried that. when I type cd and paste the boinc file it says "not a
&gt; directory" I really do not have any idea what I am doing wrong. Needless to
&gt; say I have been very keen to do my "bit" for climate prediction but having a
&gt; Mac, and not having a PhD in computers does make slightly more difficult for
&gt; people like me! Yes I feel like giving up :( but thanks for all of your
&gt; advice.
&gt; Kay
&gt;

Kay, Place the boinc application in a folder (The folder is a directory).

In the terminal window
type cd (small letters) a space, and then drag the "folder", not the application to the terminal window. That will automatically complete the path to the folder.
Hit return.
Now type the chmod ug+rx boinc_* and hit return.
It should give you no message, just a return to the prompt. If it gives you an error then instead of Boinc_* type the full name of boinc_4.05_powerpc-apple-darwin
If it just returns you to the prompt, then you are ready to go.
Type ./boinc_4.05_powerpc-apple-darwin (or ./boinc_* if that works).

Also, to make it easier, you can change the name of the application to just boinc_4.05 the same way you would for any file or program on the mac. That will make typing easier.

New to BOINC and messing with the CLI but liked the idea of a climate sim.
Finally got this running, had no luck with chmod, but cd'd to the folder, then typed "./boinc_*" and we're up and running.
Thanks shaktai

After installing boinc on a third machine, I finally got everything to work the first time thru -

1) setup your account at climate prediction, check your e-mail for code key
2) dl the client
3) make a folder and drop the client in it.
4) open terminal, cd to the folder, then chmod ug+rx "full name of client file"
5) ./"full name" - don't use the quotes.
6) enter requested info - URL first then code key

Don't really like CLIs, but this wasn't too painful.

The good news is you don't have to do it very often. Good simple instructions you wrote out too.
