Just today (Oct 8) I downloaded a new version of my Norton virus protection software. It was for 2009 and appeared to be a significant improvement. One of its features is called \"Sonar\" and I believe it goes after spyware. However I had the disagreeable experience of seeing it cancel my climateprediction task without giving me the option of excluding it (as Webroot does). Oddly my SETI task was unaffected. Of course, I don\'t know how other BOINC tasks will be treated. I have already sent feedback to Norton but have no idea if or how they\'ll respond. It does not seem that this is something that would effect only me. The thought occurs that all users of Norton who do climateprediction could be equally troubled. Should somebody change their software? But before I jump to conclusions, it\'s obvious that climateprediction needed to be alerted. |

Norton is a known problem. See this README, not far from the top. Basically, the BOINC folder needs to be excluded from scanning. Possibly only the data section in BOINC version 6. Backups: Here |

My Norton Anti-Virus offered a free upgrade to NAV 2009, which I accepted. I stopped BOINC and did the installation, which cleared my NAV exclusion list. So you should do as Les says and add the BOINC (data) folder to the exclusion list - even if it was excluded previously. Thanks for the heads-up, Davissimo. [Edit: perhaps you might change the thread title to Norton 2009 Alert ...] |

After many attempts to get help from Norton to exclude my climatepredicton from their SONAR I have finally decided to exclude Norton. Basically they continually sent the same instructions on how to exclude. After following the instructions and trying again, SONAR once more zapped my climateprediction. Although it is more important to have a well protected computer than to run climatepredition, I was frustrated by their unwillingness to listen. I am now running something called \"Fix-it Utilities 8\" from a company called Avanquest. So far all seems to be fine. Does anyone have additional information about this product? |

No, but I\'ve had good luck with \"Avast!\" -- and they make daily, sometimes twice daily, updates to the \"bad guy\" list and not infrequent updates to the software. "We have met the enemy and he is us." -- Pogo Greetings from coastal Washington state, the scenic US Pacific Northwest. |
