If you select (click on), the model name, does the show graphics button become active, or does it remain greyed out? The show graphics button becomes active and is pushed down by my mouse pointer without any graphics for many minutes of waiting. I did the HDD bad blocks checking a couple of weeks ago and it was in good condition, but seems I did not run Fix Permissions after the newer BOINC version installation. Mac OS needs the procedure after almost every application intallation. By the way, I installed new BOINC without complete deinstallation of the previous version! |

Your model may well be encountering a different problem, but the information needed is in the Show graphics window. I'll dig my Console utility for file save problems in few hours, now writing from a PC. Many Thanks to everyone for help! I really happy to receive your replies so quickly! |

Hello again Could you please tell us: 1. When you posted here on the SETI forum 4 years ago could you confirm that you were discussing a different Mac computer? I think the specs of that machine look completely different but I want to be sure. 2. If you right-click on the BOINC icon of the Mac Mini and then in the menu click on About BOINC Manager, which version of BOINC does it say? 3. How many Mac Minis with BOINC installed have you got? 4. In the Mac Mini BOINC Manager Projects tab, which projects are listed? 5. In the Mac Mini BOINC Manager Tasks tab, how many tasks are listed and which projects are they from? 6. When did you update to a new BOINC version on the Mac Mini that's processing CPDN? Cpdn news |

What a nuisance. I've looked at what I think is the same Mac Mini on Rosetta and SETI and noticed some interesting things. But I can't post what I wrote because the Akismet anti-spam program for this forum is blocking my post. Of course there is no spam in my post. Same problem with me. |

4. In the Mac Mini BOINC Manager Projects tab, which projects are listed? rosetta@home climateprediction.net SETI@home malariacontrol.net 5. In the Mac Mini BOINC Manager Tasks tab, how many tasks are listed and which projects are they from? how many tasks? 8 (eight) which projects are they from? malariacontrol.net - 3 pcs climateprediction.net - 1 pcs rosetta@home - 1 pcs SETI@home - 3 pcs 6. When did you update to a new BOINC version on the Mac Mini that's processing CPDN? Can't say for sure, about a week ago. BOINC info window tells that Last Open Date is 12 of Dec'12. Looks true. |

Now I noticed strange thing: in the BOINC Task Tab I've chosen Only Active Tasks and the only active was Climate Prediction Remaining estimated - 680 hours Elapsed - 92 hours Progress - 0.000% !!! 92 hours must be more than 10% Then I pressed the Suspend button but the CPU load utility still shows me 60% load. After that I pressed the Resume button and a few minutes late I was reading the following: Remaining estimated - 790 hours Elapsed - 4 minutes Progress - 0.000% !!! PS If I press the Show Graphics button, the Mac OS Console crash reporter reports: Fri Dec 21 18:02:43 2012 crashdump[3186]: Finished writing crash report to: /Library/Logs/CrashReporter/hadcm3n_graphics_6.07_i686-apple-darwin.crash.log without any graphics window. |

... and following is part of the log: Command: hadcm3n_graphics_6.07_i686-apple-darwin Path: /Library/Application Support/BOINC Data/projects/climateprediction.net/hadcm3n_graphics_6.07_i686-apple-darwin Parent: BOINCManager [8453] Version: ??? (???) PID: 3222 Thread: 0 Exception: EXC_BAD_ACCESS (0x0001) Codes: KERN_PROTECTION_FAILURE (0x0002) at 0x00000000 WUs now are lost without restarting:( Since now, the issue is not urgent any more, I will shut down the mini in couples of hours as part of preperation plan before the electricity repair. Nevertheless I would take part in further project computation. Fixing file permissions did not help. |

CPDN models running on Mac computers do suffer from a permissions problem. CPDN say it's BOINC's fault and BOINC says it's CPDN's fault: I just wish someone would fix it - whoever caused it. That particular permissions problem normally causes models to fail on starting, but it is entirely possible that on different machines the behaviour could be different. In the past year or so Macs have crashed thousands of models immediately after downloading without their owners apparently noticing. Our advice is: 1. Do not upgrade or reinstall BOINC until all CPDN models have finished. Then reset or detach from CPDN and do the upgrade. 2. Do not attempt to restore a backup unless the permissions are restored manually before starting the restored model. If you don't have a record of the permissions from a running model or don't feel happy changing permissions then throw the backup away. If your problem is caused by permissions then my advice is to reset the project and try again. (A 'reset' will get rid of most of the project files.) If that doesn't work then detach from the project and try again. (A 'detach' will get rid of all of the project files.) PS The 'detach' process is now called 'remove' in recent versions of BOINC Manager. |

Do not upgrade or reinstall BOINC until all CPDN models have finished. Then reset or detach from CPDN and do the upgrade. It's not convenient to wait 600-800 hours to make system restart or shut down. Is there a way to get WUs smaller, at least 50 hours? |

Is there a way to get WUs smaller, at least 50 hours? No. If they were that small, they'd be weather models, and this project is about climate modelling. About every 12-18 hours you should get a trickle_up file, which contains a small amount of data. And you don't have any of those to show for all of the hours of running. So the problem is your computer, not something with the project. As per the sticky at the top of this section of the board, each time that you upgrade BOINC, you MUST Reset the project, and make sure that all of the files are gone from the \projects\climate prediction.net folder. If they're still there, then you MUST do a project Remove and Attach. Then start again with fresh files. Backups: Here |

But you could change your CPDN project model preferences to disable the Hadcm coupled model and choose only the three types of regional Hadam model (SAF for South Africa, EU for Europe and PNW for the Pacific NWest). These models are not short but they're a lot shorter than Hadcm which is what you have now. I don't think you can wait until your current Hadcm model completes before you detach from CPDN (= remove CPDN) and attach (join) again. Change your model preferences first, then remove CPDN and join again. When the dialogue for joining CPDN asks whether you are a new or existing member, say existing and give the same email address as before. If you change your model preferences you may not receive one immediately because not many are available at tne moment. Cpdn news |

Admin, could you please check again whether after you have completely exited from BOINC you still see high CPU activity, which probably means that the task(s) are still running. If this is the case I think that when you installed BOINC you may have installed it as a service in protected application execution mode. This may also explain why you see no graphics for the climate model. Another BOINC cruncher may have had this problem and it's discussed by Claggy here. A solution to this would be, when you reinstall BOINC, NOT to tick the 'Protected Application Execution' installation box. There are, however, ways of stopping BOINC processing even if you have protected (service) mode installed. Jorden explains here in the third last section three methods for stopping task processing here but I'm not sure whether all these methods would work for Mac and BOINC 7. Cpdn news |

Admin, could you please check again whether after you have completely exited from BOINC you still see high CPU activity, which probably means that the task(s) are still running. mo.v, sorry for delay! Just checked and no CPU high activity, maybe because of I have deleted the climate project:( As far as I remember, I made default BOINC installation, therefore it must work as application, not as a service. Few years ago I tried to do so for SETI@home only with my old Mac G4 insuccessfully. I recall that time I downloaded some template script to run SETI@home as a daemon. Few months ago all user data were transferred to current Mac mini with Apple Migration Assistant, i.e. from PPC machine to Intel based new one with no Mac OS upgrade. |
