Hello, Version 5.x kept crashing (a Fortran(!) error) so I thought I would upgrade. I did some quick research on upgrading on the boinc site (http://tinyurl.com/5g9ebw) and did the following: 1) backup boinc application folder 2) add/remove programs >> boinc >> remove 3) install v6.x to same app folder The install asked for a data folder; I chose ..\\boincApp\\data. I\'m not sure where my previous data folder was, but looking around I think it was ..\\boincApp\\projects\\climateprediction.net. I connected using my previous account, but it downloaded a new project and started from zero. I\'ve probably lost a couple months of work; any idea how to restore it? Thanks in advance. |

Since you made a backup, I think there is a good chance that you can recover the previous WU. - Uninstall 6.x - Reinstall 5.x - Restore your backup I think you don\'t uninstall 5.x when upgrading to 6.x, but I am not 100% sure, as I continue with 5.x until my current WU is complete. |

In BOINC 5 the application folder and data folder were the same. BOINC 6 separates the folders in line with Windows Vista guidelines. This allows the applications folder to have more restrictive privileges and to therefore be more secure (i.e. no writing to the applications folder). |

If you have running task, you must upgrade (not remove and install new), in order for it to move the running files to the new folders. |

Thanks. I updated the boinc wiki to save future upgraders the trouble. |

If you have running task, you must upgrade (not remove and install new), in order for it to move the running files to the new folders. When you upgrade, the installer of the new version automatically runs the uninstaller of the old one (currently installed); so that can\'t be a problem... |

The location of the BOINC folder (for versions 5.* and older), and BOINC programs /BOINC data folders (for version 6), is stored in the registry. If you uninstall versions 5 and earlier, then the new version 6 can\'t find out where the old data is to use as the default location. Please do NOT uninstall BOINC versions 5 before installing version 6. However, it IS essential to uninstall versions 4.19 and earlier, as these used a totally different type of BOINC. By now, NO ONE should still be using any of these versions for this project! Backups: Here |
