After a few months of working fine, my computer has now decided to stop running my climate prediction project. Initially it said \'computation suspended\' even though I hadn\'t suspended the task. In my desperation I uninstalled BOINC and reinstalled it, but it hasn\'t solved the problem as it now says \'communication defferred\'. I have tried reseting the project but that does nothing. Please help! |

Hi Jamie. Welcome to the board. The first thing to do is don\'t panic, which is what both re-installing and resetting the project are. They just lose models needlessly. There are several reasons for Suspended, most, if not all, of which are covered in the README posts here. (4th item down in the section: Running the model, in the Running the model README post.) Communication deferred just refers to a problem in talking with the servers, perhaps because one was off line at the time of first contact by your computer. Each time BOINC tries to contact it, the deferred time increases, to reduce the load on a server which is having problems. This project has a problem with one of the upload servers, which also hosts these web pages, and the Server Status page. At certain times of the day it gets VERY busy, perhaps with also running the credits program, and a program extracting data for the physicists. First, read up on the various Suspends and their purpose. Then, if you still have a \"deferred\" problem, copy those lines from the Messages tab, together with a couple either side, and paste them here. Backups: Here |

Hi Jamie. Welcome to the board. Hi I looked at the thread based on suspends, but this hasn\'t helped as my manager doesn\'t have a \'resume\' button, it is still on \'suspend\' and I don\'t have any tasks in the tasks tab. Here are all the messages that I have recieved since I reinstalled BOINC: 08/12/2008 20:44:43||Starting BOINC client version 6.2.18 for windows_intelx86 08/12/2008 20:44:43||log flags: task, file_xfer, sched_ops 08/12/2008 20:44:43||Libraries: libcurl/7.18.0 OpenSSL/0.9.8e zlib/1.2.3 08/12/2008 20:44:43||Data directory: C:\\Documents and Settings\\All Users.WINDOWS\\Application Data\\BOINC 08/12/2008 20:44:43||Running under account jamie 08/12/2008 20:44:43||Processor: 1 GenuineIntel Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 1400MHz [x86 Family 15 Model 0 Stepping 10] 08/12/2008 20:44:43||Processor features: fpu tsc sse sse2 mmx 08/12/2008 20:44:43||OS: Microsoft Windows XP: Professional x86 Editon, Service Pack 3, (05.01.2600.00) 08/12/2008 20:44:43||Memory: 511.48 MB physical, 1.22 GB virtual 08/12/2008 20:44:43||Disk: 37.28 GB total, 9.21 GB free 08/12/2008 20:44:43||Local time is UTC +0 hours 08/12/2008 20:44:43||No coprocessors 08/12/2008 20:44:43|climateprediction.net|URL: http://climateprediction.net/; Computer ID: 885113; location: (none); project prefs: default 08/12/2008 20:44:43||No general preferences found - using BOINC defaults 08/12/2008 20:44:43||Preferences limit memory usage when active to 255.74MB 08/12/2008 20:44:43||Preferences limit memory usage when idle to 460.34MB 08/12/2008 20:44:43||Preferences limit disk usage to 9.12GB Thanks, Jamie |

All previous models and their associated files would have been deleted by the Reset. Any Deferred message might be because you have your memory limited to a low value, which is a bit too low for these models. You should set the value to 100% of what you have. Which is the minimum recommended anyway. How long IS the defer? Backups: Here |

Jamie, if you have no climate model in the Tasks tab, you\'ll need to get a new one. * Is climate prediction.net listed in your BOINC Manager Projects tab? If it isn\'t listed you\'ll need to reattach using the Tools menu (and you\'d need to say you\'re an existing member and give the same email address as before). * Are any other projects listed in the Projects tab? * If climateprediction.net is listed in the Projects tab, what does it say in its Status column? If it says Won\'t get new tasks, you\'ll need to click once only on the Allow new tasks button. * Click on the Activity menu at the top of BOINC Manager and check that you\'ve selected Network activity always available, or available based on preferences. And check in the same Activity menu that you\'ve selected Run or Run based on preferences. Please tell us whether doing those things gets you a new model. Don\'t press the Detach or Reset or Abort buttons at any stage. Cpdn news |

Hi, I opened up BOINC today and its working now! I don\'t know why, because I haven\'t changed anything, but I\'m not complaining! Thanks for all your help. |

Jamie, a couple of models you had earlier, for example this one, crashed with -107 errors. This usually indicates a graphics error and probably means you should update the computer\'s graphics drivers. Free downloads from the web. Go to the CPDN READMEs using the link in my signature. Find the README collection about crashes and problems. Item #7 there is by Thyme Lawn who explains how to get these updates. Cpdn news |
