Since March 12, 2009 Mac's have been receiving the new 3P application. Compared to a similar Windows machine, the Mac's are running them only 1/2 as fast. Has there been an error in compiling the application for the Mac? I have been advising people not to run 3P on their Mac's. It is inefficient and contributing to Climate Change! |

Hi Billy I don't think there's been an error in compiling the Mac application, but as you may have seen in the forum News thread post about HadAM3P (top of Number Crunching) if you run more than one of these models at a time they can slow each other down a lot as they contend for resources. How big the slowdown is depends on the computer. Were you running two HadAM3Ps simultaneously? I agree that the speed of this HadAM3P is slow compared with other model types you've run. Remember that in the ClimatePrediction preferences section of your account you can select the model type you want to download next. I see that you've felt it necessary to abort about half the models you've downloaded. Nobody needs to let the server send random model types. Could any other Mac users comment on the speed of HadAM3P (both running solo and side-by-side with others)? The general guideline is that if they're earning similar credit/hour to other model types they're doing fine. Cpdn news |
