I repeatedly noticed that boinc stops responding in Activity Monitor. But BOINC keeps running perfectly. This seems to have no affect on crunching CPDN, but when I quit the boinc process in Activity Monitor, it forced BOINC Manager to restart work on the 2 active units from the last savepoints on each task running. What's happening here? Does it affect crunching when the "Not Responding" warning is shown? Running MacBookPro 2.16 GHz Intel Core Duo OSX 10.5.7 BOINC Manager 6.6.29 Tasks are using hadsm3 v609 and hadsm3mh v604 Keith |

CAN SOMEONE PLEASE EXPLAIN WHY THREAD "boinc" IS NOT RESPONDING? THREAD "BOINC" IS NORMAL. SOMEONE MUST KNOW WHAY IS HAPPENING HERE. AN ANSWER WOULD BE APPRECIATED. It seems that none of the Mac people are "home" at the moment. I'm not sure what you mean by "thread", whether it's a Mac term, or you're talking about the 2 parts of BOINC - the client (hidden), and the manager (gui), which is the part that shows you what the client is doing. Normally, the only time that "thread" is used, is when talking about posts on this (and other), forums. On Windows, there are 2 ways to install BOINC: 1) As a 'service', which starts up before Windows itself, and 2) As a 'non-service'. In the service mode, the client needs to be explicitly stopped from in the manager's menu (Advanced > Shut down client), before Exiting from the manager. If this isn't done, only the manager (the gui), is shut down, and the client and it's associated science apps continue to run. In the other mode, you only need to shut down the manger with Exit, and it will automatically shut down the client as well. (I think that there was talk about fixing this in versions later than 6.2.8, so that it wasn't necessary to first shut down the client, but I don't know if this ever happened.) The servers currently have some severe problems, (one is out of storage space, and another, the one for trickles, user accounts, and this forum), has been slowed down by the huge amount of processing needed for the credits processing. Les Many, many thanks for reply. My apologies for use of "thread". the correct word should have been "process", of which threads are part. I get the impression that this little bit of "untidiness" left in the program may be slowing down the crunching? The way I stop this "not responding" is to quit the boinc process from Activity Monitor. Then a "signal 2" message appears in the messages and everything gets cleared from Projects and Tasks screens in Boinc Manager, only to reappear in a minute or two, everything back to normal, with apparently no loss of crunching (back to the last SavePoints). It is a great pity that the credit processing is slowing everything down, because, although the TOTAL figures are great, the AVERAGES are absolute RUBBISH and a waste of processor time. All that is needed to gauge the average is visually by the slope on the total graph The averages graphs should be scrapped unless they can be revised in a much more simplified way. At present the averages graphs are a laughable meaningless mess. Keith |

Les I have found what seems to be the solution to my "boinc" process repeatedly becoming "not responding". Following your comments:- Advanced/Shut down connected client.../cancel       That removes all units etc. (& 'boinc' process ex activity monitor) Tools/Attach to project...       Then restores back to normal (with 'boinc' process responsive in activity monitor) The latter happens without an expected dialogue box after the "Attach to project..." command Any way, I know what to do next time "boinc" decides to be "not responding" All is restored to the last SavePoints as expected. I was wondering if this situation had been arising after routine system updates on the Mac. Whatever the cause, it did not stop the crunching, although I have a suspicion that it did slow speed of crunching slightly. Keith |
