Hi, folks, I\'m very interested in HADAM3 WUs because they need more memory and thus make my pc\'s available memory more useful.

When will more HADAM3 WUs be available?

Thanks for any information,

Eduardo

Probably not for a while. The current focus is on the Millenium, (FAMOUS), model.

Does anyone know when the next batch of FAMOUS models will be released, other than just \"soon\"? I know that they are working on the stability problem that was revealed by the last batch. And will the next batch be more 200 year segments or the entire 1000+ year model?

It\'s not just stability. Every time it looks like it\'s OK to release them, a \'show stopper\' is found.

Adding to Les\' reply, initial release is likely to be 200-year segments. (We haven\'t tested full-length runs yet.)

Thanks guys. Is there a forum where I can keep up on the status of the FAMOUS models?

Not really. Just the beta threads about each version of the model as it appears, and the posts are mostly \"I\'ve just completed ...\", or \"This one failed, with error ...\". There\'s a few explanatory posts by Hiro on what\'s causing certain errors, etc.

e.g. Over the last couple of days, starting from when the beta server failed, I\'ve completed 4 version 6.06 models, and about 6 hours ago, I found out that a new version had been issued, so I aborted 4 version 6.06 models which were less than 25% completed to start on the new version 6.07 models.

On my fast quads, it takes about 15 days to complete a model, so it will be a while before I get to see if they succeed. But there are a couple of faster computers which take about 10 days. It depends on what version they\'re crunching.

Hi there,

Wich are the memory required for all WUs types?

I\'d rather get those with more memory requirent.

Thanks,

Eduardo

Of the two model types that are currently available, hadam3p requires about twice the memory that hadsm3 requires. I believe it is about 220 MB.

Thanks for the information, I\'ll get 3P until HADAM3 is available again.

But these programs were possibly developed considering the PCs available some time ago and the computing power evolution is very fast and besides the cost of memory lowers still faster!

Thanks folks,

Eduardo

The programs are created to produce the type of research data that the particular group of climate physicists need for their current work.
The hardware available, (amount of ram/processor speed), usually doesn\'t come into it.

Two exceptions to this:
1) A couple of years ago, a group at another UK university were working on a high resolution climate model that would have required about 5Gigs of ram. We lost our contact with that project when he moved on to other work.

2) What most climate physicists really want, are models that are very high resolution over the entire globe. However, they know that hardware available to most home users would take a couple of thousand years to run just one of these models, so they keep their requests more reasonable.
About the only (generally know) computer able to run models of this magnitude, is the Earth Simulator in Japan. A description at the time it started working, said that the computer part occupied an area the size of 2 tennis courts.
