... for the last 15 hours but appears to be unable to, ie it logs 'deferring communication' messages even when net-connected (it doesn't say why its deferring). It has passed two trickle points (10,800 & 21,600 ts) so it should have trickled (my XP beta has, or at least it logs 'Scheduler RPC succeeded' messages). Are there any known linux communication problems? SuSE 9.0, default firewall, dsl. Cheers, PeterV. |

hmm, I haven't seen that, perhaps if you quit and start up with the old -update_prefs http://climateprediction.net argument it would do it (and think that it's online in the future)? |

I have already restarted with -update_prefs, my old startup script contains that option from the alpha days. Good thing about the new version - typing ctrl-c in an xterm now kills it stone dead, no more having to kill off hadsm* in Ksysguard (task manager). Other good thing - my two linux (and 3 XP) trickles have gone through and been recorded on my results page, once I drilled down through enough links to get to them (hint supplied by another betan on the board). Semi-bad thing - it is still occasionally logging (only on linux) the occasional 'deferring' message, occasionally as frequently as 10min intervals, even when the box is connected. However, now that trickles are getting through I'll just ignore them, unless it starts supplying me with cogent reasons as to *why* it wants to connect and why it is deferring. Thanks, Carl. My linux box is not trickling either (at TS 80500), and the -update_prefs thing didn't work for me. Whenever I restart the client, it says "2004-08-09 23:01:53 [climateprediction.net] Deferring communication with project for 5 days, 15 hours, 58 minutes, and 23 seconds", though the time changes obviously. I was just wondering... does the client attempt to ping someplace to see if its net connection is alive? because my ISP (earthlink.net in the US) blocks pings. So it will probably always think it's offline. TZ |

So it will probably always think it's offline. When it only says "Deferring communication...", it is, I believe, only an informational statement, that is, it hasn't actually tried to connect anywhere, it's just telling you when it's going try the next time. If it is actually trying to connect, there are extra messages including some sort of failure message if it fails to connect. |
