I have a p4 2.4g running windows software. Even though I have shared resources on boinc only one application will run at a time. Is this normal? If so that sucks.

Suggest you mosey over to the Intel site and let them persuade you into buying a nice new HT processor!

BOINC timeslices about hourly instead of swaping several times per second. Most of the BOINC applications are memory intensive and swapping kills the L1 and L2 caches slowing down total processing.
