I\'d like to run boinc (which I\'m actually able to do since I compiled one for myself) in a dual-amd64 box (Opteron). I\'d like to support this project with my spare CPU cycles, but I cannot do that, since boinc cannot download the appropriate binary. Any hope for amd64 binaries?

if you run the boinc_4.05_i686-pc-linux-gnu it will run fine on amd64's, that's what I run at home. Perhaps in the future we'll have actual amd64 compiled versions but we are low on cash for experimental fortran compilers etc.

Yes, I'm currently doing that, but my major problem is that ths above version runs much slower on my computer, since I have to run it from an i386 jail..

But anyhow, for temporary, it'll take the job..

Thanks,

well I have an amd64 at home, and may convince Myles here to get me an amd64 laptop to use on the project, so it's probably the next thing we'd work on. Unfortunately getting free Fortran compilers has sort of eluded us, so I'll have to make a good case to spend our funds on an amd64 Fortran compiler. I didn't have much luck on the Absoft compiler for some reason, which is the only one I've tried (this million-line climate model isn't the easiest fish to land...)

AFAIK there are opensource fortran compilers available for amd64 platform, such as g77 (at least, in Debian distribution).

Anyhow, thanks the good news :-)

oh g77 won't work, a Fortran 90 compiler is needed (and g90 is far from being able to compile this unfortunately)

Have you looked at this?

http://www.nag.com/nagware/NP/NP_trial.asp

30-day free trial

yeah they didn't work unfortunately, it's not just having a Fortran90 compiler, it's having one that has Vax & Cray compatibility and a bunch of other things necessary to run this model!

Greetings.

Excuse me for intruding in Your thread, but this remark by Carl´:

> Unfortunately getting free Fortran compilers has sort of eluded us, so I'll
> have to make a good case to spend our funds on an amd64 Fortran compiler.

made me thinking about the amount of AMD Processors, both Athlon XP's as well as Athlon-64's that are crunching away on Intel Optimized Code, making a poor presentation of AMD processors!!

(I myself run 3 Athlon XP's and only one Intel P3-850) My laptop Intel is using 7 secs/TS running at 850 Mhz only, so my 'digestive acid level' rises when I realize that my XP 3000+ Barton have to spend 3.5 seconds/TS....

How about approaching AMD explaining to them how poor their processors perform here, and ask them if they would be interested in greatly improving their image by 'donating' a Fortran Compiler capable of making AMD optimized Code for the CPDN Project.

I know Carl can pretty easy 'count' the number of AMD equipped Machines participating in CPDN.

Maybe AMD will respond positively. They will get a lot of goodwill for the price of just one Fortran Compiler 'Donated' to the worhty cause. :-)

What do You think?

I did hear from them awhile ago but nothing ever came of it (the same with Apple, Sun, Absoft, etc). I guess our app, which doesn't exactly make any CPU or compiler look amazing due to its' complexity, isn't that great of an "advertising mechanism!" So I don't think we're ever going to get endorsements and free equipment as other projects have been able to.

It was long time ago when you wrote me to try to compile it for amd64.
I'd like to ask whether it's succeeded or not.

I haven't succeeded in getting the Absoft AMD64 Fortran demo running CPDN (although it compiles). I'm afraid this is going to be a low priority since there will only be Tolu left handling CPDN client work after November as I am moving on.
