The PC version has lots of controls such as suspending model operation when the computer is being used for other activities. Is there any way to set such controls on the OS-X version? |

To update run with this switch: -update_prefs URL You would need to replace URL with http://www.climateprediction.net to update your preferences for this project. If you run ./boinc -help it will print out the options. Or if you use anything that it doesn't recognize it will print out the options. |

Here is a list of common CLI commands that should work with most BOINC projects. The commands follow the "start" of boinc. You can issue multiple commands at once, just leave a space and remember to precede each command with the - URL = the URL of the project you want to affect -attach_project Attach this computer to a new project. (You must have an account with that project. You will be asked for the project URL and the account ID.) -show_projects Print a list of projects to which this computer is attached. -detach_project URL Detach this computer from a project. -reset_project URL Clear pending work for a project. Use this if there is a problem that is preventing your computer from working. -update_prefs URL Contact a project's server to obtain new preferences. This will also report completed results and get new work if needed. -return_results_immediately Contact scheduler as soon as any result done. -run_cpu_benchmarks Run CPU benchmarks. Do this if you have modified your computer's hardware. -check_all_logins If 'run if user active' preference is off, check for input activity on all current logins; default is to check only local mouse/keyboard -exit_when_idle Get, process and report work, then exit. -allow_remote_gui_rpc Allow GUI RPCs from remote hosts -help Show client options. -version Show client version. |

Then change the radio buttons. > > There is no way to override this in the command-line versions. It doesn't seem to matter what I set as my preferences. For some reason, it insists on computing while I am doing other things on the computer. Even issuing the command: ./boinc_4.13_powerpc-apple-darwin -update_prefs http://www.climateprediction.net doesn't seem to catch my new prefs. Joe |

Hi Joe, From what you've said I guess you've switched off the "Do work while computer is in use" option. Unfortunately that doesn't work reliably in the current release of BOINC. I think it's fixed in the BOINC development build, but there's no word on when that's going to go on general release. > I think it's fixed in the BOINC development build, but there's no word on when > that's going to go on general release. I just grabbed the latest nightly: <a href="http://boinc.berkeley.edu/source/nightly/boinc_public-cvs-2005-01-27.zip">http://boinc.berkeley.edu/source/nightly/boinc_public-cvs-2005-01-27.zip</a> and have built it for Mac and placed it here: <a href="http://www.sims.berkeley.edu/~jhall/temp/boinc_4.19_powerpc-apple-darwin.zip">http://www.sims.berkeley.edu/~jhall/temp/boinc_4.19_powerpc-apple-darwin.zip</a> Unfortunately, it still doesn't recognize the preference where it is supposed to cease computation while you're doing other things. I guess we'll have to wait. (I didn't look at the bug list, so maybe someone there has submitted a patch that solves this. Joe |

Sorry for sending you down that route :( The development build is on a totally separate (non-public) source path. 4.19 was released yesterday and is available on the <a href="http://boinc.berkeley.edu/download.php">BOINC download page</a>. If you want to try out the development build click on the link at the bottom of the page (or use <a href="http://boinc.berkeley.edu/download.php?dev=1">this one</a> instead). Ah, and dev versions aren't built for powerpc-apple-darwin (just linux, solaris and doze)... I could build the dev source for powerpc-apple-darwin with access to the dev source path. Any hope of this? (I'd just need read access and I'm a Berkeley grad. student... if that matters! :) ). If not, that's fine too... best, Joe |

Sorry, I can't help you there Joe, but you could try asking on the boinc_dev or boinc_opt mailing list. You can join either of them <a href="http://boinc.berkeley.edu/community.php">here</a>.
