The Guardian newspaper in its constant pursuit of truth has investigated how different people spend Christmas in the UK.

33% of pets receive a stocking full of Christmas presents.
7% of pets receive clothes as gifts.
Last year in the UK 1548 people sent in their online tax return on 25 December.
10% of people start drinking alcohol before 9am.
7% of Brits have needed to claim on their home insurance after causing drunken damage on Christmas Day.
56% of people plan to check their work emails on Christmas Day.
About 20% fewer women go into hospital to give birth on Christmas Day than the day before.

This year I have received a Christmas card from a dog so I believe it all.

Best wishes to all our crunchers!

... And in case your young'uns want to keep track of Santa Claus/Father Christmas/whomever, on Christmas Eve, here is NORAD's (North American Air Defense Command's) countdown and tracking:

Here inn New York City we have a strange tradition. A local TV station will broadcast logs burning in a fireplace (a Yule log) from 9:00AM to 1:00 PM on Christmas morning. Yup, burning fossil fuels to generate electricity to watch a continuous loop of a dead burning tree, by people with no "fireside" traditions because they've never been near a real fireplace or campfire in their life.
On the up side it's cold here and if they're watching it with an old tube TV or a plasma screen it will add some heat to their home.

Well, Ron, given that I'll be 77 y.o. in a few weeks (if I survive holiday Champagne and single malt!), I can reasonably claim to have given-up on Santa Claus at least a year or three ago -- and have no family nearby to provide an excuse (they're scattered from California to China). So...

Enjoy!

Jim

Best of the Solstice season and (Western) New Year to all. My perennial wish: that your next year be your best yet -- but not your best ever.

Thank you and I fully reciprocate your wishes.

I hope I'll be able to continue contributing, although my status currently says I won't get any more tasks.

Hi, Phil,

Your machines experienced a few download problems recently. Has anything changed that might have caused that?

The AMD machine shows two tasks running and both are receiving credit.

I don't understand your comment "... status currently says ...". (Surely you haven't received an email from staff at Oxford indicating that one of your machines is misconfigured ...)

[EDIT] Neglected to add -- Season's Best to you and yours, with hope that WX treats Australia more kindly in your coming Summer.
