I have Broadband, but I keep it switched off when I am not actually using it. (I know it would cost me nothing, but I worry about hackers who look for open links and also on-all-the-time machine that they can hijack for junk mailing.)

It just did this even though I am currently linked and it could have communicated.

I also wonder what it is communicating about, since I already have a work unit running, 9% complete.

CPDN is making a "trickle" roughly every 1.4% in current version, this small file is uploaded along with a scheduler-request.

BOINC updates the time to next scheduler-request every 1 hour, therefore you'll get this showing up in the log every hour counting down. To automatically connect, if using the win-gui, navigate to "Projects"-tab & right-click CPDN and choose "retry now".

BTW, since you're turning off your connection, if running the gui recommend going to File-menu and choose "Disable BOINC Network Access". Till you enables this again, or restart BOINC, you'll not try to upload/download anything.

Thanks, disabling the BOINC network did do the trick. It starts communicating again as soon as it can.

I use Broadband in exactly the same way; so it’s easier to monitor the kids’ usage!

CPDN trickles statistics every 10,802 timesteps, although a complete phase is 259,248 timesteps, and of course there are 3 phases for each model. Even with your IP/ISP link disabled, when it becomes available this trickle information should find its way home to the CPDN central servers. So from the BOINC message log AFAIK the following messages indicate such communication:

I don’t do anything with disabling BOINC network access when I connect or disconnect my ISP/IP connection. AFAIK, when my ISP/IP connection becomes active, the trickle information is registered.

I also have this problem... in addition my GUI locked up and stopped progressing when I reached a trickle, while waiting to comunicate with the servers. It did not continue 'crunching' even though the status under the work tab was 'running' the CPU time was not progressing at all. I connected up and tried 'update' (right-click under the projects tab) and that sent in the trickle and I think solved the issue. I have now disabled Boinc network access and I will wait and see if that solves it. Certainly a mention should be made in the installation instructions.
