One question I'd pose is this: What is causing the acceleration of the glaciers? I'm aware that it's climate is changing, but is it the warming/ melting of the glacier or is it the rising sea level or a combination of both? |

One question I'd pose is this: The IPCC AR5 reports are worth looking at. The "physical science" report has a chapter on the cryosphere (e.g. index, Chapter 4, Section 4.4.4, "Causes of Changes in Ice Sheets"). As ever, the answer is complicated: the retreat of a high mountain glacier may have one explanation, whereas a grounded Antarctic ice sheet melted by "warmer" water from below, and Greenland yet another; and explanations of Arctic ice extents seem to involve changed wind patterns. The physics take-away message though is simply that energy is going into the system - sometimes the atmosphere, sometimes the ocean - and in the form of heat will tend to cause ice to melt eventually. It's hard to see why that wouldn't happen. |
