Hi, Pending credit is not actually used by CPDN and is I think a meaningless number generated by BOINC.

This is discussed in detail in a few threads in the number crunching section. My understanding is that a move of the servers on to virtual machines has messed up the automatic running of the credit script so that when run on auto it produces wildly excessive numbers. This means that it has to be run manually which means when one of the two programmers has time between sorting out the problems with the latest full resolution ocean models, getting the latest batch of PNW tasks out etc. I know that many find the lack of credit uptodateness annoying but for me, the science is the real reason I do this and this is one of the few distributed computing projects which is producing really useful results.

Hi Dave,

Thank you for the explanation. I am confident my results are making to the CPDN Servers so as you say, happy to help with the science. Cheers

And this is not the first time that the credit system has been on hold for a long time. They always catch up eventually. Trouble is that messes up those who are all competitive about it and take part in team challenges etc.

It is quite relevant, and important, for projects that need to use multiple replications of a task for verification/quorum purposes.

I understand that, I meant meaningless in terms of CPDN.

Quite right. CPDN tasks are shorter than they used to be but still relatively long. Suppose a task takes a month to complete: should no credits be awarded until validation is successful? how long would the project have to wait for a valid result if each task takes a month? how much energy would be consumed in the pursuit of validation? In projects with no ethical dimension the last question perhaps does not apply. But the first two are serious questions for any project and some volunteers, myself included, participate in this project because of concerns about climate change and not purely for the pursuit of knowledge.

In my experience, Linux machines will produce the same results from these very long calculations so rarely that the efficiency of a Linux-only work unit would be close to zero and the time-to-validation effectively infinite. Alternatively, the Linux or Mac minority user would always lose credits to the majority Windows user. Is that a price worth paying for a tick in the validation box? Given the statistical sophistication of the project's ensemble analysis, I would say not.
