CP on my server (according to boinc) has not shown any activity for some time. I have other projects that are running ok.

I'm getting messages saying that CP requires extra disk space, but according to boinc, there's already 4.88 GB of CP data on my hard drive, taking up nearly 3/4 of the available space.

I've tried resetting the project but this hasn't worked.

Any ideas how I can kick start it into action?

Your computer is set to run 8 models at a time. As the data slowly accumulates before being zipped and uploaded, each model can get up to a bit over one Gig. The models currently being tested are using higher res ground features, and so these will take up even more space. (zip files are approx 66 - 70 megs each.)

Also, you've had a few failures. These can leave behind bits of files.
So, look at the names of the folders beginning with a model name; if it ISN'T one that's currently in the Tasks tab, then delete the entire folder. This may get you back a bit of space.

In addition to what Les has said, at least one of your completed models is one of the Short ones and they don't seem in my experience to clean up after themselves.

Ok. Thanks for the feedback.

Just to clarify what I should and shouldn't delete:

CP has started running again and the task name starts with "hadm3s_" In the file system, there's lots of files and directories starting with that prefix. I assume these are associated with the running task.

There's also two other sets of directories and files, prefixed with "hadm3p_" and "hadm3n_". Note there's executables, directories, .xml files and .zip files in this lot. I assume these are defunct and I can delete all of them?

Hi Tony

You need to go a bit further with the names.
That first part is the particular climate program being used. The 3rd part is the 4 character short name.

So, this is one of mine: hadam3p_anz_m5ac_2012_1_009270040_1

In this case, the part to look for would be m5ac.

It's best to leave the other parts that you mentioned alone.
There's lots of miscellaneous bits to the modelling.

To get to the correct folders to delete, go into the projects folder, then the Climateprediction.net folder and if your display is like mine, at the top will be all the task folders and there will be one for each task running and sometimes a number of others which can be deleted.

Again, thanks for the replies. Unfortunately, they don't help me very much.

Since my last post, there's no CP task running. CP is taking up 5.5 GB of space, and there's a message:

UK Met Office HadAM3P-HadRM3P Pacific North West needs 1451.62MB more disk space. You currently have 455.73 MB available and it needs 1907.35 MB


CP is now taking more than 3/4 of the available allocated space.
Unfortunately, I don't have any more space to give on this partition.

(I've tried to insert here a list of file names in the CP directory, but they're not readable.)

Most of the files seem to relate to the HadAM3P-HadRM3P quoted in the message.

As providing more space is not an option, what's the best line of action to get things running?

If you don't have anything running, and you don't have left over folders that you can delete, then there's only two things that you can do.

One is to do a Project reset, (that's in the Projects tab), which should delete ALL of the files from cpdn. Then the project server will download all of the files that it needs next time you get work.

The second is to go into your account page on the project, then into the first set of preferences, and set the number of processors to use on this project to 50%, (half of 8 = 4 processors). This will stop BOINC trying to send you more work than you have space for. You may even have to go to less processors than that if you're pressed for space.

(Note that as you're running other projects as well as cpdn, you'll have to start using Venues, so that you can have different options set here to what you have at the other projects. You have 3 to select from:
Home
School
Work
with the other projects using Default.)
(And this needs to be done first, as you need to set up the new prefs in the new venue.)

Before you do either of these, go into the Projects tab, and set climateprediction.net to No new tasks. This will let you change things without it trying to do anything until you've finished.
Afterwards, set it back to Allow new tasks.

I'm using BOINC Manager. The Global work preferences in BAM website aren't reflected in the global work preferences shown on the CP website. Which has priority?

My BAM work preferences are to use 6 of the 8 processors on my server.

How, if I want to set up work preferences on, say, the Home Venue, do I get CP to use this and get the other 3 projects I'm running to use the Global Venue?

Do I do this from the BAM website, or do I have to go to all four project websites and set up these individually?
