Hi. BOINC manager keeps asking for more memory for climateprediction.net tasks. I keep adding more and more, but still there's not enough. I must be doing something wrong. Where do I go (and what do I need to do) in project preferences to increase the amount of memory available to the project? I use an Apple iMac with 24GB RAM running OS X 10.8.5 Thanks in advance. Doug. |

24Gig is more than enough for four cores. I suspect the problem is with settings for hard disk. Go to tools, computing preferences, Disk and memory usage, to see what your settings are Increasing the maximum percentage of disk use for BOINC and or reducing the percentage of disk to be left free may help. The other thing worth checking as you have a lot of crashed tasks recently is find the BOINC projects folder, go into Climateprediction.net and any folders in there which do not have the model names of running tasks can be safely deleted. These can run to several GB. Also on my box the "short" tasks leave their folders behind even when they complete normally so I check whenever a task finishes to see whether it has exited cleanly or not. |

Thanks for the advice. I have 0.001GB left "free". 80% resources are available when computer is in use and 90% available when not in use. I have 85GB available to BOINC from my disk space. I have upped that to 185GB. I shall try and find the BOINC folder and see what's what in there. I shall keep you posted, but any other comments or help if any of the above is wrong/to little/to much etc., would be great. Thanks again, Doug. |

Further to my last reply, I have found the projects folder but cannot tell what's what in there, though there are loads of folders with a .GZ suffix. BOINC is still calling for more memory to be freed up for climateprediction.net when I update the projects, so very odd. In short, not wanting to break anything, I have left the above folder alone. Any thoughts? Thanks again for any help. Doug. |

once you go into the climateprediction.net folder, there should be a folder for each task that is running plus I think one called txf and one called ttf. It is the task folders that take up the space. Any that are not for tasks currently running can safely be deleted freeing up several gigabytes of space. |

Yes, as Dave said. To make it clearer still, this should be your folder/tree structure: Projects Climateprediction.net the-folders-for-each-of-the-models-on-your-computer. <--- these are the folders that you should consider deleting IF they don't match the names of running models!!!! |

Hi again, okay, thank you. As there were no running projects/tasks (because it keeps asking for extra memory and I cannot find out how to increase it and it won't run without it) I have deleted all the folders in the project folder. I have "updated" the project and am awaiting the "deferred" communication to go through so will update you then. But as I say, I still need to discover how I can add more memory to the project to get it to run. I detailed earlier in this chain my current settings, do they look okay for example? Regards, Doug. |

Thanks for this, as previously mentioned to Dave, no folders matched projects that are running because none are running as there was not enough memory. I have therefore deleted everything. Let's see what happens now :) Regards, thanks again. Doug. |

UPDATE: Hi again, I have checked the BOINC project interface (Total Disk Usage) and I now have 8.89GB free, so the deletion of the folders seems to have worked. I'm just awaiting climatepredication.net to communicate again with the server and I presume new projects will be attached? Fingers crossed... :) Thanks once again for all your help. Kind regards, Doug. |
