I wonder what percentage of the CPDN LINUX users know this?

Posts have been made lots of times over the years about ldd, and it's always been possible to look at a failed model's Stderr list to see what happed, which will show the missing library.
Also this thread was intended to be a "how to fix things", but was soon turned into a discussion thread. So it becomes: How many people go all the way to the start of this thread to read the original post?

But I suspect that it doesn't really matter much, as there are very little Linux suited models being released now. The focus seems to have shifted to the variable area, variable run length, WaH2 models, which are Windows only.

If you have a "new" installation or maybe a new .gnu files from CPDN, you would have to -
1) Download at least one task and let it abort to get the new .gnu file(s)
2) Run the ldd command to find missing libraries
3) Install some stuff
4) Repeat steps 2 and 3 until nothing missing

The .gnu files for all available model types should download when you attach to the project. You don't have to actually download any work to get them.

Pardon if this is duplicating previous information, but it's been years since I last ran CPDN on Linux.

This morning, when I noticed there was apparently work for Linux machines available, I went ahead and attached one machine. It's a relatively fresh Ubuntu 14.04 LTS install.

Noticed (at lunch) from stderr that 3 models had errored out instantly with "../../projects/climateprediction.net/wah2_8.12_i686-pc-linux-gnu: error while loading shared libraries: libstdc++.so.6: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory"

I found the package that contains it is lib32stdc++6 and installed it. (I took a gamble and guessed that the 32-bit library was needing since the app was identified as for x86 rather than 64)

Obviously I'm a long way from proof that all is working, but the most recent task is ~24 minutes in and chugging along fine so far.

Yes, that's the little pest.
Without it, models will fail after about 6 seconds.

Can anyone tell me why all the tasks I get are failing? Every task fails with an unzip error:

unzip: cannot find or open wah2_data_8.12_i686-pc-linux-gnu.zip, wah2_data_8.12_i686-pc-linux-gnu.zip.zip or wah2_data_8.12_i686-pc-linux-gnu.zip.ZIP.
unzip: cannot find or open wah2_sas50_fhj4_201412_13_348_010329813.zip, wah2_sas50_fhj4_201412_13_348_010329813.zip.zip or wah2_sas50_fhj4_201412_13_348_010329813.zip.ZIP.

This is the only error given. I've checked unzipping the files manually and it works fine. I've also checked that all the permissions are correct. I do have boinc installed in a non standard directory (the default partition was too small so I had to move it).

It used to be possible to change the data path in cc_config.xml but that option has been disabled now. If you have installed through package manager then I think this thread may help.

Every other project works fine, so I'm pretty sure there isn't a general problem with my boinc client, I also already have a symlink set up from the default directory to the new one (just in case).

I was going to suggest it was a particular batch of work buton checking I can see it is happening across model types.

I know others have put things in other places to avoid using their SSD for BOINC and for other reasons.

All I can suggest is trying the stand alone version rather than the packaged version of boinc, and then copying across the relevant boinc directories? If you disable internet access first in case it crashes anything you could then go back to the packaged version to finish off any work in progress before getting new work on the stand along BOINC?

Hi Desti, I also notice that your first ranked computer ID: 1227722 has been trashing everything since sometime last year despite the tasks being from differing batches.

The BOINC folks upgraded their advice for running 32 bit apps on 64 bit Linux distributions. You can see the updated instructions here:

I am returning to CPDN after a long hiatus, and have been searching the boards for advice on the reliability of Win10, and the procedures for installing on Linux (Mint 17.3)
Your comment here that recent tasks are Windows-centric indicates that Linux may not be a good choice.
Win10 has its frustrations, and I was hoping to extend my expertise in Linux Mint with this adventure into CPDN. However, the only tasks which are downloading for me (on DELL XPS14, Win10) are the WAH2s.

You can install the windows version of BOINC under WINE If anything, I am having fewer tasks failing under this than I am on my, "pure" Linux boxes.

I am also in the process of converting one of my linux boxes to dark arts of Gentoo but don't expect to have anything to report here in a hurry! The answers are not emerging clearly :(

And with Wine you get to run any version of "Windows" you like, from about 2.0 to 10. I'm running the XP version because that's what I had for years.

And, if you move back out of this thread and look at the list of threads, the top one in the unstickied section is about using Wine.

Included in this Summer's (Winter's, South of the Equator) forthcoming 'Anniversary Update' to Win10 is the other side of the Wine coin (for want of a better metaphor) -- capability of embedding Linux within Win10. Of course, "the proof is in the pudding."

I have several copies of Win10 ('free' upgrade version) and there are petty problems, as usual with any OS, most controlled by overriding M$ defaults.

One major problem for those of us running CPDN is M$'s arrogation to itself to update our machines at will. I've not had trouble with it but it requires attention to the little icon in the lower-right of the screen. That flags one to close running jobs then go to 'Updates' manually trigger update. Updates seemed random at first but they seem to be tied to "Patch Tuesday" lately.

I haven't run Linux (SuSE, later OpenSuSE) for years, so can't offer 'prejudices' about expected stability.

I am still ensnared in the Wine ratsnest which arrived with the LinuxMint17.3 download package. The configuration settings did not include Win10, and so I listed Win XP which I had just recently trashed. Les has been successful with this route so I will try again.
The Wine Intro says Wine "allows one to cleanly integrate Windows applications into your desktop".
Oh, really?
But one must read everything, no intuitions permitted, and one finds that merely downloading the latest iteration over an existing Wine install is the equivalent of spilling a glass of Yellowtail red onto the keyboard.
I will try this again and report on the progress.
