... no sign of any Zips thus far (14%) on the PNW task, which is a bit suspicious.

Message 54225 - Posted: 31 May 2016, 20:20:49 UTC - in response to Message 54224.

Mine on Windows ranged from about 4 hour intervals, to a bit over 4.5 hours.
Zips are small - a bit over 1 Meg to about 2.5 Megs.
Restart file is about 43 Megs.

One model is here
wah2_pnw25_zdzx_200112_24_406_010596034_0

Where, Oh Dear, I've just noticed that there's only 12 trickles. Hopefully just a display problem.
Another email. :(

Ah, maybe my model is really only half as far as it thinks it is (i.e. 7%), in which case it might trickle at a bit over 8% (i.e. 16%). That should happen later today (BST).

Please forgive the off-topic post, but creating a proper thread for this topic is currently not possible.

wah2 8.12 on MacOS X -- is it safe?

The reason I ask is that I have not seen these WUs listed as available for MacOS X, and after over 72 hours they have not sent a trickle-up message.

These are the 3 WUs currently in progress on my machine:

wah2_eu25_94cv_204712_13_399_010544869_1
wah2_eu25_8dmj_209212_13_402_010562121_0
wah2_eu25_0ary_207412_13_400_010546428_1

Someone please let me know that these are legit. If another machine could process these WUs better than mine, then I would prefer to release (abort) them.

Leon

Yes, they're legit, or fair dinkum as we say "down here".

wah2 are the one's in the top part of the Server Status page, which are for (Linux, Mac and Windows)

As for no trickles (and their associated zips), if you have the Network access disabled, then they won't be sent.

Some of the other things that may be getting in the way, are:
1 Running other projects beside cpdn
2 Not running the computer 24/7
3 Using your computer intensively yourself
and others.

One thing that you could check, is the Status of each of the tasks in the Tasks tab. It's the right hand column, and should say Running.

That theory didn't last long: no trickle, no Zip by this afternoon. Checked the model's XML files, which expect 25 Zips and show the model at 29% (81,409 steps out of an expected 276,779). So the progress indicator is right but no trickles or Zips are being produced. There's a problem somewhere.

Iain, I sent them an e-mail yesterday with links to your post and your computer. Haven't heard anything back yet. Not sure if there's some kind of vacation for the key people or what?

Thanks, George. That model is being run with me wearing my "don't shout at me I'm not a moderator" hat - i.e. 19684760.

Just to confirm the absence of trickles. The one wah2 task I have has just passed 26% in BOINC Manager's Tasks tab and is dominating the pie chart in the Disk tab, but hasn't attempted any trickles or uploads so far. No mention of it in the Event Log since it was downloaded and started on Sunday.

Hi Iain, Leon, Nigel,

Thanks for reporting this, it is peculiar behaviour but it would be great if you could continue running these models.

We can report that the uploads are working and we can see zips on the upload servers. It appears the trickles are not, but we can apply credit retrospectively for those workunits.

We are looking into this, but in the mean time please don’t abort tasks.

Nigel (and others)

This is most peculiar.
If the zips are on the server, then there should be a record of the transfer in the Events log.

Just to be quite clear:
Trickles are NOT zips, and zips are NOT trickles.
And zips show in the Transfers tab, but trickles don't.

And this is what should be in the log:

Thu 02 Jun 2016 13:01:14 EST || Resuming network activity
Thu 02 Jun 2016 13:01:14 EST | climateprediction.net | Started upload of wah2_eu25_8ecr_209712_13_402_010563065_0_10.zip
Thu 02 Jun 2016 13:01:14 EST | climateprediction.net | Started upload of wah2_eu25_02b9_203312_13_394_010512819_0_10.zip
Thu 02 Jun 2016 13:01:14 EST | climateprediction.net | Sending scheduler request: To send trickle-up message.
Thu 02 Jun 2016 13:01:14 EST | climateprediction.net | Not requesting tasks: "no new tasks" requested via Manager
Thu 02 Jun 2016 13:01:19 EST | climateprediction.net | Scheduler request completed

One way to check if the zips/trickles are being created, is to set the Network option to Suspend.
Then wait, while checking every now and then to see if trickles and zips appear in the climateprediction.net folder.
(Trickles are easier to see, because the zips are mixed in with other zip files.)

Rather baffled by this:

As Les suggests, my Mac has been running with network activity off since 9 AM yesterday morning to trap any Zips. None were trapped. Progress is now reported as above 39%, so there should have been at least one more Zip. The model progress file wah2_pnw25_z8af_199812_24_406_010588636.xml shows the timestep is now 109,825 (which is two trickles further on than yesterday).

The client_state.xml file is still showing no completed uploads (i.e. <nbytes>0.000000</nbytes> for all 25 Zips).

The Boinc Manager version on the Mac is 7.6.22, the same as on my Windows machine (which correctly completes the <nbytes> field), which leaves open the possibility that BM for Mac has an error not manifested on Windows.

[Edit: Note that the Zips have been created: wah2_pnw25_z8af_199812_24_406_010588636_0_1.zip (to 9) are in the project folder. Perhaps they'll be uploaded when the model completes - i.e. the flip side of the error message about "missing zips" for a crashed model.]

[Edit #2: However, no trickle files in project folder. So, maybe the explanation is: no trickle file ==> no trickles on Web site and no Zip upload trigger; Zips are uploaded at the end, which is why Peter comments that Zip files from Mac models are on the server (but presumably not for models not yet completed).]

I can confirm that the upload zips that we have on the upload server from mac builds are monthly uploads from simulations that are still running.

Thanks, Sarah. Do you have any uploads from my PNW model wah2_pnw25_z8af_199812_24_406_010588636_0 (not on this account).

And could you give some examples of Mac models for which you do have Zips? It might then be possible to see whether there are any systematic differences.

There were permissions problems in the past with Macs: my machine might need a detach/reattach cycle to restore permissions; however, the application download is new and that's the important one ...

I have three what look like upload zips in the project folder (wah2_eu25_120h_203212_13_395_010518631_0_1.zip to wah2_eu25_120h_203212_13_395_010518631_0_3.zip) and nothing that looks like a trickle. Current task progress is 27.76%. Presumably the zip interval's 8.33% (ie. 12 or 13 zips per task) as with HadAM3Ps, although this doesn't chime with Iain having nine zips ready to go after only 39%.

That particular PNW is a 24-month run rather than 12 months, so 24 + 1 Zips in total rather than 12 + 1.

Ah right. Thanks. How does one tell what kind one has — apart from the frequency with which the trickles and uploads don't happen? ;)

Also, I have no graphics with this app (wah2). Is that right?

The current naming scheme has an indicator, thus wah2_eu25_120h_203212_13_395_010518631_0_1. So "13" for "12 months", "24" for "24 months". (I don't know why it's not "25" for "24"!)

There aren't any graphics on my models either - I get the impression the project has found it hard to keep up with all the model types over the years, which is a shame.
