An update on this from us: we have seen a decent number (~300) successful completions from the new Mac version, so we are hoping that the zips that aren't being sent will upload at the end of the runs. This behaviour is peculiar and we are working on a replacement app which will fix this.

In the meantime, please keep running these models, but if they do fail to upload when they reach the end, let us know ASAP.

Also, a slight correction with the naming convention- the _13_ actually refers to a 13 month workunit ( we are running some workunits from December 1 to December 31 of the next near). This then has 14 upload zips.

Cheers,
Peter

Thanks, Peter. My own current task is still running and has an estimated week of processor time to go before it finishes. Uploading fourteen 73MB files may take a while too. ;) I'll report what happens.

The reason for wrongly supposing that the naming convention varied was the number of trickles reported in some complete _13_ models I checked, which had only 12 of the 13 expected trickles. Checking old stdoutdae.txt files today showed that 13 trickles had indeed been generated, as in:

However, rechecking the reported trickles, I was surprised to find that something has changed today - my oldest _13_ is wah2_eu25_a108_190012_13_366_010337266_0, for example. Look at the time of the final trickle: it completed in March but the trickle has just arrived in the right place today. Presumably, credits may get a small nudge upwards.

Whatever has changed won't improve the situation for my current Mac model because no trickles were generated. The missing trickles (and credits - i.e. a 13 model got the same as a 12) made me wonder whether there might be a cross-platform error but today's update confirms the new Mac application as the prime suspect, as Peter says. I'll carry on running the models and check for Zip upload on completion.

The trickle-less task has completed successfully, wah2_pnw25_z8af_199812_24_406_010588636_0. Network activity was turned off to see what would happen at the end: 25 Zips appeared in the transfers tab in Boinc Manager, 24 Zips in the range 1.05-1.81 MB and the 25th at 42.96 MB, and uploaded successfully when the network activity resumed.

The monthly Zips do seem rather small, which may be relevant, but absent of advice to the contrary the remaining two eu25 tasks on that Mac will be run, the project will then be put through a detach/attach cycle to void any permissions problem and then continue processing WAH2 models until a new version of the Mac application is released.

Note that there is another nuance to the behaviour of the Mac application, absent of trickle generation. A power-cut knocked out my Mac and, on restarting, Zip #1 appeared in the transfer tab. When the second Zip was produced (but no trickle) then Zip #2 did not appear in the transfer tab, until BOINC Manager was restarted. Since these eu25 Zips are much larger than the pnw25 Zips (~70 MB vs ~1 MB) it seemed like a good idea to upload them both rather than wait for them all to upload at the end, which they did after a couple of attempts.

So, without requiring the Mac app to behave differently on different Macs, all the following statements can be true:

1. A running model uploads no Zips.
2. A running model uploads some Zips.
3. A completed model uploads all Zips.

And statement #2 is probably true for a crashed model.

(Apologies to Boinc Manager aficionados for being rather slow on the uptake here: this desirable BM behaviour may be obvious to others but it's news to me...)

My own task too has finished overnight and the zips have all appeared in BOINC Manager's Transfers tab, ready for when BOINC reconnects to the network in a few minutes' time. The file sizes add up to 1004.04 MB in the Manager, but to 1052.7 MB in the Mac OS folder. Presumably this is something to do with Mac OS now using decimal kilo sizes. There's no mention of impending trickle messages in BOINC Manager's Projects tab.

OK. The upload took two and a half hours, but the server was up to it. ;) The task was successfully reported an hour later. All smiles on the task page, except (as I write) for the absence of trickles.

Linux also seems to use decimalised kilo sizes but I will refrain from getting worked up over the decimal system reclaiming what started out as a decimal prefix in the first place!

Many apologies. The link in my earlier post is to an hadcm3n task I had in March/April. I've no idea how that happened. The correct link is http://climateapps2.oerc.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc/result.php?resultid=19601252.

Hi all

I've recently completed 4 WAH tasks on my Mac using the new client, but don't seem to have been assigned credit for any of them?

The tasks in question are

http://climateapps2.oerc.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc/result.php?resultid=19701441
http://climateapps2.oerc.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc/result.php?resultid=19645773
http://climateapps2.oerc.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc/result.php?resultid=19643162
http://climateapps2.oerc.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc/result.php?resultid=19594737

I have another three currently crunching...

Any help you could give would be much appreciated

Thanks

Dave

Hi Dave

The credit Scripts are now only run once per week.

There's a News announcement about it here.

Dave,

There is currently a fault in the new Mac WAH2 application that prevents the creation of trickles. Since no trickles are generated no credits are awarded. The Zip files containing the science data are generated and uploaded, so if you are content to continue running on that basis then fine. Otherwise, a promise has been made to add credits for Mac models by some other mechanism than trickles: we'll have to wait for that to happen.

So, it's a trade-off between the good news of revived Mac support and a bug that will be fixed at some point. Since I'm concerned only with the science I'm continuing to run the models on my Mac, but it is completely understandable if others take a different path.

I have 13 outstanding WAH2 results, dating back to early June, for which I haven't gotten credit. Four of them were assigned only to my computer; nine of them were assigned to other computers which got "error while computing" results. Two of those had credit granted to one of the computers with errored results.

I have a Mac; the other computers which I checked were not Macs (a mix of Windows and Linux).

Results from just my computer:

I have the same issue. Projects run for many days on my somewhat ancient Mac, finish out so far as I can tell, but no credit is issued. I don't expect brass band salutes, but at least a little atta boy once in a while would be appreciated.

Just to put an expected tick in a box: having completed three Mac models with a complete set of Zips but no trickles, the project was removed from that Mac and then added back again to exclude the possibility of a permissions problem. A new WAH2 model has downloaded and started running: Zip #1 has been produced but no trickle. So permissions are not the problem.

Newbie here, although I ran SETI@Home for a while, and have published world air-sea CO2 models of my own.

I just signed up for climateprediction.net, and the BOINC manager says 'No work available to process'. Do I deduce correctly that this means that there is nothing I can run on a Mac at the moment? Or does it mean that I have not clicked the right button somewhere? (Hint: the message itself could be made a little clearer on this point!)

Having given up on all things Bill Gates, Microsoft, and Windows in 1978 over his sloppy work for MSBASIC on the Trash80 (Radio Shack's TRS80, 8 bits, 128kb memory, 4 MHz, twin floppies) I am astonished at the preponderances of Windows. (I am currently running my 27th Mac.)

Would I do better to sign up on my Ubuntu machine (a Dell 2-in-1 netbook)? It has a flaky cursor that likes to run over to the Launcher and click on buttons while I am working. I have held off attempting serious work until Dell gets this fixed.

Not discrimination against Macs on this occasion. If you click on the fifth item up from the bottom on the left hand menu on this site, you will see there is no work for the rest of us at the moment either.

Several months ago the website told me of a change to a new website and said I needed to remove this project and then re-add it. Despite the message, the project had been running normally. I nonetheless tried removing and re-adding, and the website stopped sending me work. I tried removing and re-adding again. Again, no work. What did I do wrong?

The supply of work here is erratic to say the least. After a couple of weeks or so without any work for anyone apart from the resends of tasks that have failed on one or more computers already, there was nothing till a couple of days ago and those few thousand tasks were gobbled up by more CPUs waiting than there were tasks. What does the event log say?

If you see the following, it just means that your computer didn't contact the project at the right time to get the work.

Thu 11 May 2017 16:11:01 BST | climateprediction.net | Requesting new tasks for CPU
Thu 11 May 2017 16:11:03 BST | climateprediction.net | Scheduler request completed: got 0 new tasks
Thu 11 May 2017 16:11:03 BST | climateprediction.net | Project has no tasks available
