I just started running CPDN on my macbook. I'd like to join the skepticalscience team, ideally adding the macbook to the account already there from my linux PC. But if that cannot be done, I'd at least like to join the team. I was never offered the option when I downloaded the BOINC manager (more precisely, reloaded it, since I now run Yosemite).

Hello jpl

To have several computers on the same account, you need to choose Existing user when adding extra computers.
The new computer should then be part of any team that your already existing computers belong to.

Multiple accounts CANNOT be joined together.

To join a team, go to your Account page, look at the column on the right hand side near the bottom, and click on find a team.

In the BOINC manager of your new computer:

1) Click on Tools in the menu
2) Click on Add new project or Account manager
3) Accept the default, Add new project

In the drop down window
1) Click on climateprediction.net
2) Wait while it communicates with the project
3) Click on No, existing user
4) Identify your self, using the same user name and email as for your other computers.

When I select Climateprediction.net from the "Choose a project" page, and hit "Next", I get a warning from the BOINC manager that "You already added this project. Please select a different project." I cannot get past that message to have it communicate, or to specify "No, existing user".

In that case, you've already added the new computer, and would have been given the choices that I mentioned at the time.

Did you select New user or No, existing user ?
Did you use a different user name and/or email address to what you used for your existing computers?

I don't recall. Let's assume I did the dumbest possible response. All I want to do is to start crediting my macbook for the skepticalscience team. I'd prefer not to lose all the computation already done, but I expect to do months of calculation, so if I have to lose a few hours, that's not a big deal. I just want to start crediting my use to skepticalscience. I don't understand why this is so complicated. There are other worthy projects. If it's easier to contribute my resources to them, that's ok, but I really like doing something about climate change.

It does sound as though you're created a second account for the Mac.
Because of this, the 2 accounts are "owned" by 2 different people.

This applies to ALL projects, not just here. And lots of people get caught by this.

To get all of the computers on to one account, you have to kill the current Mac account, and lose whatever you've done there.

On the Mac:
1) Go to the Projects tab
2) Click on the climateprediction.net name to select it
3) Click the No new tasks button
4) Go to the Tasks tab
5) Click on the name of a model (to select it)
6) Click the Abort button
7) Do 5) & 6) for all climate models
8) In the Projects tab, click the Update button

In a few seconds, the project's server will be informed that those models have been Aborted, and will arrange for them to be re-issued.

In the Projects tab
9) Click the Remove button

Your computer will now be disconnected from cpdn, and you can start again.

Your user name is what you've been using to post here.

Your email address can be found near the top of your Account page. (On your Linux computer.)
( Click on email address in the "Change" option WITHOUT CHANGING ANYTHING! )

Your password may be in your web browser's menu *, but if not, use the account identification key from the file account_climateprediction.net.xml file, which is in the BOINC (data) section of your Linux computer. **

Thanks Les! The button was labelled "Yes, existing user" (not "No, existing user") and all it wanted was email and password (not user name). And now the mac is showing up on my account.

The only hitch is that it is only running 1 task now. I checked my local preferences, and made sure it said 0% of the processors, but there's just one task running. I'd like to run more (although running just one has turned the fan off, which is not a bad thing).

Perhaps the different words is due to a difference between Mac and Linux. The software for each is written by a different person.

BOINC only asks for 1 task to start with, to "try it out" and see what certain things are. e.g. How long it's supposed to run, how much memory it uses, and others.
As time goes on, it asks for more. In the case of cpdn, there is a minimum time before more work can be asked for. This is to prevent people hogging the limited number of tasks available, by getting dozens of tasks, and then taking a year to process them. The delay is about 1 hour and 8 seconds.

I see that you now have 4 tasks running, so it's getting there.
