Just getting a bit frustrated digging around the forum to get answers to the questions I have. There's clearly lots of expertise about. Wouldn't a Wiki be worth the investment (of other people's time!)? It might save the experts from being pestered with questions that they've answered before. And it should make life easier for the ignorant (e.g. me) as well as saving us from the embarrassment of asking daft questions.

To me the biggest problem with a wiki would be keeping it up to date. While there are problems that recur and others that new people discover, the forum is the quickest way of addressing new problems.

Though I am able to answer a number of questions, there are also occasions when I get it wrong and have to be corrected by one with more experience/knowledge of the system.

Also like some of the others who answer questions here, my knowledge is mostly limited to just one of the three operating systems involved. (Linux) I have only used windows in a run and forget mode. This means my knowledge of Mac and windows is mostly through these boards. Perhaps of more use would be an updating of the FAQ section a bit more frequently based on the knowledge that comes out of discussions here.

Perhaps I am missing something but I fail to see what a wiki would do that the FAQ can't.

Thanks for the welcome and the replies. I think I made it clear that I'm not in a position to carry this one through... perhaps that's just a convenient excuse that may start to wear thin! I wasn't criticising anyone - just feeding back some frustration.

I found the FAQ fine for getting started. It was when I wanted to make sure that the tasks on my machine were completing OK that I started to find the process of getting information a bit taxing. I thought I'd struck gold when I found this sticky:

about the tasks running on my machine has not been very encouraging. Over the last few months the CPU time ascribed to tasks with status "completed" is 2.8e6 seconds while the same number for those whose status is "error while computing" is 7.3e6 seconds! That sounds like a big waste of electricity and perhaps not really worth leaving the machine switched on for! I see now that it looks like a very recent thread may be relevant:

That is because of security problems on the PHP board it had to be taken down. Apart from the fact that when one board was down it might be possible to discuss problems etc. on the other board there is little to be gained from having two boards in my opinion. And while getting the best out of the search feature on these boards does take practice/experience the same is true of a wiki, especially if like some I have seen they are not well written!
