Yes, you are right. But the best way for me to control it is with Ubuntu 18.04.

I run Win7 64-bit on an i7-4771, and do not suspend before rebooting. Usually, there is no problem, but in the last batches (wah2_sam25 and _pn25) they have been erroring out.

There is your problem. Usually you do get away with rebooting without doing the suspend/exit procedure, but, once in a while you catch the WU’s at a critical moment and they crash. It’s a crap shoot.

True enough, but I don't reboot my Ubuntu machines for weeks at a time. I could try WINE again on my new build, though I have not had much luck thus far. But that would be more practical for me than Windows. I still have a couple of Win7 licenses, but I would not trust them on a new Ryzen CPU and motherboard.

I got two:

Wed 28 Mar 2018 07:39:27 PM EDT | Requesting new tasks for CPU
Wed 28 Mar 2018 07:39:29 PM EDT | Scheduler request completed: got 2 new tasks
Wed 28 Mar 2018 07:39:31 PM EDT | Started download of hadcm3s_83bk_201412_120_564_011006611.zip

Wed 28 Mar 2018 07:39:42 PM EDT | Started download of hadcm3s_816o_201412_120_564_011003843.zip

Wed 28 Mar 2018 07:39:44 PM EDT | Starting task hadcm3s_83bk_201412_120_564_011006611_1 using hadcm3s version 834 in slot 4

Wed 28 Mar 2018 08:07:31 PM EDT | Starting task hadcm3s_816o_201412_120_564_011003843_1 using hadcm3s version 834 in slot 5

I suppose these are re-treads, but they are something.
I checked: the previous attempts timed out.

There seems to be a problem with the 64 bit version of BOINC under WINE.

I had a pm from one of the moderators who was really stuck with trying to get BOINC to run on WINE and my last ditch suggestion was to go 32Bit on BOINC and that sorted it out. Certainly on recent Ubuntu distributions BOINC has only worked for me with the 32 bit version.

Recent Ubuntu 64-bit I've had problems also.
Did an end-run running mostly Debian Jessie 64bit in Virtual Machines (or old Mint 17.X)

BUT - Artful seems to be OK with 64-bit BOINC under WINE v3.0, maybe Ubu 18.04 will also work.

EXCEPT on CPDN on my AMD 1700X where CPDN runs fail 80% of the time but WCG runs work "almost always" -- haven't figured that out yet -maybe mobo, maybe AMD cpu, maybe all this Meltown and Spectre "fixes" -- maybe I'll change mobos maybe just wait.

32-bit -- won't do it for me -- CPDN mostly doesn't need more than 3G address space, but other stuff I run does.

So - also try Ubuntu Artful or any Debian 64-bit. I'll try a Kaby or later -lake this year sometime, probably, in case the problem is hardware :)

I am running WINE3.0 on Artful at the moment. Can't remember if the last 64 bit version I tried was 3.0 or not. Will probably wait till 18.04 comes out before making any further changes. As I don't run anything but CPDN tasks on BOINC under WINE there probably isn't any noticeable benefit in me changing anyway.

Thank you very much - that is probably it. But I solved the problem the old-fashioned way. I re-installed Windows 7 (64-bit) on that i7-3770 from whence it originally came, since by shifting work around to my new Ryzen and other machines it is now free. Fortunately, the original OEM license was still good, and it activated properly, even though I had put Win10 on it for a while. Life is good, except that the servers are now down. See what you can do about that.

Really? Are there too few 64-bit Linux systems to be worth a recompile?...

;-)

The greater reliability must be worth something?...

There is no need to recompile for 64-bit Linux systems. All that is necessary is for those systems to run 32-bit climateprediction.net tasks is to load the 32-bit compatability libraries. How to do that has been posted years ago.

I have only one program on my machine at the moment. Here are the libraries that are needed, and the .rpms where they can be found.

$ ldd hadcm3s_8.34_i686-pc-linux-gnu

Interesting.
Both had a first run on the same Linux computer, and they both failed after about 4.75 days when they couldn't find a library file.
This was before the first zip, so it may have been the lib that makes the zips.

I hope that you have better luck with them.

I noticed that. In the recent past, those work-units I have received seem to have followed the failure of someone else trying them. But all the work units I have received recently have completed correctly.

My computer is 1256552. The most recent ones that errored out were:

https://www.cpdn.org/cpdnboinc/workunit.php?wuid=11131907
https://www.cpdn.org/cpdnboinc/workunit.php?wuid=11135004
https://www.cpdn.org/cpdnboinc/workunit.php?wuid=11122340
https://www.cpdn.org/cpdnboinc/workunit.php?wuid=11104137
https://www.cpdn.org/cpdnboinc/workunit.php?wuid=11103518

This was before the first zip, so it may have been the lib that makes the zips.

Long ago, I had a problem like this. And the problem was just as you said; I had the required library, but it was out of date.

If my (unreliable) memory serves, I seem to be able to complete work units that have failed on other machines. I would like to believe that my hardware and software is better than theirs, but I do not really have enough evidence to conclude that.

My current two work units have now submitted their first trickles at about 24 hours of CPU time, with about 300 hours to go. If the past is prologue, I will submit no more trickles, or, at least, get no recognition for them.

If yours are completing, your software is superior in that it has all the missing 32 bit libs.

As Ubuntu has dropped 32 bit support I will be copying the libs from this machine to my laptop which has had a fresh install.

My reading of it is that Ubuntu 18.04 LTS will support i386 apps into 2023 but that 18.10 and beyond will be very restricted in that area. However, flavors of Ubuntu (MATE?) may support i386 farther into the future.

That is my reading of the situation too. (I upgraded both my boxes to 18.10 last month however. One via the upgrade option but the laptop via a fresh install hence my need to do something about it! Actually, I also have an old netbook with a 32 bit cpu which should also have the requisite libs on it but I don't want to assume it will go on forever so I intend to save the libs in a number of different places, including dropbox.

They are not complete, but they are still running: around 70 hours (each) now, and they did their only (unless something has been fixed) trickle at around 24 hours, IIRC. Around 264 hours to go.

My two are still running and have done about 85 hours each, with about 250 hours to go. They have uploaded three trickles each, but the web site only acknowledges the first one.
