Trying to collect a few things in one place. This may require a few edits as other things happen. *************** The newer models are/will be, using the newest version of the MOSES land scheme (which is version II), and also TRIFFID. These are more detailed then the earlier versions that we've been using. Because of this increase in detail, more time is need for the extra calculations, more memory to do the calcs, and more storage in the BOINC data area on peoples computers. They also produce lots more data to return to the projects that use them. MOSES and TRIFFID are land use schemes, and details can be found by a web search. They are also used for one of the "Linux only" models. (See the Server Status page.) And then there's this at the end of the MaRIUS project page: This will in particular involve the inclusion of an improved land-surface scheme into both the global and regional model, and a higher-resolution regional model at 25km. And higher resolution ALSO means more time and data. **************** So, time for faster computers, more memory, larger areas reserved on the HD for cpdn, and more patience waiting for one to complete. |

Worth noting that the HadAM4 at N216 resolution tasks use over 1GB of memory each. On my ageing desktop which is 2 cores and 4GB of memory each one takes 34.2% of memory so almost 1.4GB. Not a problem if the machine is doing nothing else but add in a browser, email client, word processor and The Gimp, for example and severe slow down is experienced. We really are heading to 4GB/core being the minimum for running tasks without any issues. I have restricted my Desktop to only using one core for BOINC unless everything else is closed down. On my laptop, with 4 cores and 8GB of ram I restrict it to three cores if running these tasks. The hadcm3 tasks it can happily use all four cores without issues. |
