I have 3 Macs running climateprediction.net. All 3 were running for several weeks but all have stopped and give the message "unable to connect to core client"

I tried restarting 2 of the Macs but that did not help. What should I do?
Thanks
Michael

You're not going to like this.

This is also happening on some linux hosts as well. There is a thread there that talks about it. https://www.cpdn.org/cpdnboinc/forum_thread.php?id=8474

What you can do to get boinc started again is stop boinc, if running, edit client_state.xml and remove lines related to the crashed tasks. These would be a series of lines that include errors like this

<file_name>wah2_eu50r_a000_201312_26_d813_000006441_0_r1658532949_26.zip</file_name>
<error_code>-161 (not found)</error_code>
</file_xfer_error>
<file_xfer_error>
<file_name>wah2_eu50r_a000_201312_26_d813_000006441_0_r1658532949_restart.zip</file_name>
<error_code>-161 (not found)</error_code>
</file_xfer_error>

only there will be far more of them.

This is not a satisfactory way to resolve this, but it does work. The link above goes into this more. It's a combination of problems that some work units have that cause a crash on Mac and Linux PCs, along with a limitation of boinc being unable to handle lengthy error messages. It is the boinc issue/limitation that stops the boinc client from connecting/restarting correctly.

Your not going to like this even more.

I have had the issue being discussed here under LINUX.

My solution was to delete client_state.xml and client_state_prev.xml as these seem to be corrupted somehow.

You obviously will lose all of the tasks you have (abandoned) but projects can handle these.

Now everything will work.

I would like it a lot if I could find the files. Can you give me a hint as to where they might be on a mac?
f
unix find did not see them.
Thanks

On my Mac: /Library/Application Support/BOINC Data

[Edit: I am continuing to download Mac models and run them, but would abort any 49-month PNW before it started. That should be fine.]

Hello,

got also this problem starting 21/09 with an older mac and Boinc version (7.6.34). After reading Boinc forums, it seems indeed related with some CPDN issue.

In order to restore Boinc, I did severals tricks as editing files and uninstall/reinstall Boinc and other stuff like that without success, but the one who did worked was very simple : I went into my Time Machine and restored the full "BOINC Data" directory from the last Boinc working date (aka 20/09 in my case).

And as soon as I have restarted Boinc, my projects were back in the manager. To prevent Boinc to crash again, I have suspended CPDN untill further notice from here ;)

Nota : it would maybe have worked with a more specific directory but I'll let someone else find out ;) Loosing 1 day of computation is not a big deal since it's working again.

As reminded by Iain, files are located in /Library/Application Support/BOINC Data

I went through most everything suggested here. not the Terminal stuff!
Finally plugged the plug on BOINC.
Some time later got a "We Miss you note"
I then revisited the site, i found a much newerversion for mac than i had been using.
Downloaded it and Bingo!All my projects except climate change up and running.
How Why? where had this version been? Dunno, maybe the beer I was holding at the time.
Climate change remains aloof, being British, probably upset that I've been AWOL for some time.
Strange things still happen even in 2017.

The reason you don’t have anything running from CPDN is that there aren’t any Mac models available at the moment. When a new Mac application is released then models will start to download. I’ve also updated my Mac to the latest BOINC Manager and it’s waiting too.

And, no, I don’t know when the new application will be released. Sorry.

Thank you, Ian.
I was getting annoyed with nothing arriving.
Plenty other tasks to keep the show going.

thanks. I knew that something was up. I did have a few things run since my original problems but mostly idle this month. Which is a pity since I have commandeered 6 unused macs here at Berkeley Lab. My office looks like a used computer store.

I should perhaps clarify slightly. The application that has been withdrawn for Mac and Linux is the WAH2 version for (mostly) regional runs. The HADCM3S application is still enabled for global runs. There was a release of 104 HADCM3S models yesterday, many of which were taken by Macs and Linux - however, that number of models is quickly gone. My Mac didn't get any.

Looking down the batch list you'll see that HADCM3S batches 657, 649, 643, 618 and 602 still come out in dribbles.
