I suspect it is because the servers are down.

Now up and running again.
Though servers were running yesterday when I checked so it may be something else.

This is curious. It was the wrong URL. I used the one in BOINC 7.8.3 on my Ubuntu machine, which was http://climateapps2.oucs.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc/.
However, I then checked my Windows 7 machine (also BOINC 7.8.3) and it was using http://climateprediction.net/

So I tried that one in the Ubuntu machine, and it worked. How it got wrong on the one machine and not the other is not clear.

And I don't know when but at some point it will I think be changing to https:.... so look forward to lots of posts about this from all platforms then!
