Estimated processor time: nine and a quarter days…. NG |

Hi Nigel Thanks for that. It may be my WiFi setup, although I can't get around the idea that my Mac complains that unsecure sites are OK, but secure sites aren't. And the Linux machines are happy with all of them. I'm going to dig out the bits and pieces of a wired connection, which runs through my phone line. But first, the shopping. :) |

@Les Bayliss & @Dave : thanks for the info. It seems quite odd to me that "mac only app" cannot be upgraded in any way and will be limited to machines that will be older and older - and less and less existent too. It's basically wanting the app to die, or do you mean you do the same calculation / better with some of the other apps (for other OS then) ? You mention OpenIFS but it is linux only (on your applications page). The only other app for mac you seem to have is "UK Met Office Coupled Model Full Resolution Ocean" from 2011, so I don't even think it's useful talking about it. |

It's basically wanting the app to die, or do you mean you do the same calculation / better with some of the other apps (for other OS then) ?The code can not be upgraded because assuming someone at Oxford has the skills and time to do it, the license from the Met Office is too restrictive and doesn't allow for changing the code. (I suspect in any case that while the skills are probably there the time may not be or with a million plus lines of Fortran, it would take a while!) You mention OpenIFS but it is linux only (on your applications page). That needs to change. It may be that they get released for one platform before the other and or some batches will be for only one OS. I think that the testing ones have all been for Linux or Mac, certainly when some have appeared on testing site and I haven't been able to download any they have been all Mac batches. The only other app for mac you seem to have is "UK Met Office Coupled Model Full Resolution Ocean" from 2011, so I don't even think it's useful talking about it.I think it extremely unlikely any more full resolution ocean batches will appear but I have been proved wrong on things to do with the project before... |

You mention OpenIFS but it is linux only (on your applications page). If I understand you well OpenIFS is this only app where there may be a future for macOS version, but I'm not sure to understand what you are saying now, the only thing I can see is there is only one CPDN app released more than 2 years ago, linux only |

You mention OpenIFS but it is linux only (on your applications page). There were very, very few openIFS tasks released on the main cpdn site back then as kind of an additional test. On the beta site, testing is still ongoing for Mac and Linux for new versions of openIFS. When this will be released to the main site is still uncertain. |

OK I understand better, thanks. Therefore am I right to conclude that it is very unlikely to have any working CPDN tasks on a recent mac, now and in the future ? |

OK I understand better, thanks. Sorry, I should have been clearer. openIFS is strictly 64 bit. It is being tested on 64 bit linux and 64 bit MacOS. For Macs, I doubt that it will be recompiled for M1 processors, but for Intel type processors, it should work. |

You mention OpenIFS but it is linux only (on your applications page). What I mean is the information on the website is wrong. OpenIFS does also run on Macs and a number of batches run on the testing sites have been for that platform. If they haven't changed the website when they get closer to running on the main site, I will remind them to change it. |

I was more referring to your comment "When this will be released to the main site is still uncertain", obviously I do not have access to the test environment where it is possible to run OpenIFS for mac. You then say "for Intel type processors, it should work" you actually mean "if a mac version of OpenIFS is deployed on CPDN public project, am I right ? So my remark was : unless this OpenIFS app is open to the general public and provides some regular work, someone having a recent Intel mac (I'm not even talking about M1, my iMac is the last Intel generation December 2020) with macOS superior to 2018 macOS versions cannot run CPDN. But this is only a factual remark, I understood the reasons now and I don't whine ;) |

Four days ago, I wrote: I wrote:I've also just re-enabled CPDN on the MacBook Pro, which I haven't done up till now because the tasks are likely to take a week or more of continuous running on it and I've been reluctant to have it working so hard for so long at its age. I'm currently waiting to see if it manages to get any tasks and how it gets on with them. The task was still processing happily up until last night. It had returned five trickles and the sum of the elapsed and remaining times had reduced from nine and a quarter days to around eight and a half. But in order to give the cooling fan a rest (it's the second the machine's had), I suspended BOINC computation before going to bed last night and shut down the machine. On starting up it again this morning, the BOINC initialisation messages included the news that computation for the CPDN task had finished and that the remain output files were missing. Given the timing of events, it seems likely the task simply didn't like being interrupted. Since I'm not willing to have the replacement fan working that hard continuously for over a week, I've suspended that machine's CPDN work fetch again. https://www.cpdn.org/result.php?resultid=22192600 Meanwhile, one of the tasks on my iMac (which I hadn't shut down) also errored during the night, but this appears to be through natural causes.
