Hello,

I have not had any tasks assigned for over 6 months. Is there anything I can do about this? My system is Windows 10, CPDN user 709143.

Thanks,
Ron.

CPDN has no Windows tasks and are unlikely to have any in the short to medium term.

You could run OSX tasks in a virtual environment?

Ron.
There have been no Windows tasks for several months. Currently the only tasks are HADCM3S ones which because of errors using Linux are currently Mac only. When Linux work becomes available again, this link If you follow it from the start gives details of how to run Linux tasks using WSL.

For Linux users there is the possibility of Mac emulation though I haven't got it to work yet. I don't know if there is something similar to run the Mac tasks in emulation under Windows?

Follow the new work announcementsthread if you want to get an email when new batches go out.
Current task types are
Hadam4 and Hadsm4 for Linux

Hadcm3s For Mac

WAH2 for Windows. Though the people using this task type have moved on from the universities that they were sending the work to Oxford from so native Windows work may well be a long wait.

Saying that, there is a batch on the testing site of WAH2 type at the moment and occasionally, testing batches mean a main site batch to follow but I have no clue as to whether that is the case with this batch.

Ron/Dave, macOS Mojave V10.14.6 is working here, on a Windows 10 PC, with VirtualBox 6.1.32. The Virtual Machine is 16GB RAM, 4 CPU, 100GB disc (SSD), Darwin 18.7.0. After I rebooted, to increase the Virtual Machine cpu count to 4, the first task did the usual 'crash bang wallop' from 'missing output files' (sorry). Four tasks have just downloaded after waiting for the project delay (1 hour) ... Time to take a lunch break.

There are now windows tasks available to download. One of my PCs got four the other gets 0 tasks. Do I have something set incorrectly?

Checked the task list for this PC and found that it has been locked out for years. I have completely re-built it since then. Can someone please unlock it?

Email sent to Andy. I don't know if he can do this remotely or if it has to wait till he is back in the office on Tuesday.

Why don't you create a new computer account for this computer and try to merge the old one into the new one later?

Independent from that:
Your Linux clients run BOINC v7.18.1 which is an Android only release.
Using it on Linux is known to cause lots of problems, hence must not be used.

Andy has checked. When a computer is locked out the max no of tasks per day is set to -1. This has not been done for your machine. Andy says there is no evidence it has been locked out. However until the recent batch it is a long time since the last windows work. Also the current batch has been stopped because of the high number of tasks crashing and will be resent once the exact cause has been found and rectified. Keep an eye on the server status page and the forums as with the number of computers chasing work they won't last long!

This machine hasn't gotten any tasks for 5 years. I accept that it is not locked out, but I wonder what else could be wrong. That's a long time between drinks.
Thanks.

Not a lot to do about it at your end unless you want to run a dual-boot Linux+Windows or virtual Linux system.
A few "windows" tasks have escaped into the wild recently, but they have been few and far between.

And the overwhelming majority of the latest batch have crashed but another batch is being prepared. Also I have a 113 month NZ windows task running from testing. It will take almost a month real time to complete but it is likely this is a prelude to a Windows batch.

Message 69101 - Posted: 3 Jul 2023, 20:14:24 UTC - in response to Message 69052.

I went to upgrade my Boinc version in Virtual Box from the Android version (BOINC v7.18.1 ) to the proper Ubuntu version. One system upgraded perfectly. The other did not. When I run Boinc from the UI, The message is:
BOINC Manager (Pre-release) - Daemon start failed
BOINC Manager (Pre-release) is not able to start a BOINC client.
Please run the client and try again.

When I try to start the client from the terminal, I get "command not found".
Any suggestions will be appreciated. Note that I am a Linux newbie.

Note this is the 'Windows' forum not the linux forum but I'll answer here (maybe the moderators can move it later).

What error(s) did you get during the installation?

Have a look in the /usr/bin directory. There should be two files; boinc and boincmgr in this directory. My guess is they are not there. If not, then try the install again.

Also have a look in /var/lib. There should be a directory there called 'boinc'. Again, if it's not there, the install did not work, so try it again and post errors (but to the Linux forum not this one).

Guessing it is in the Windows section because the user is using VB under Windows. Just changed my vb installation of Ubuntu23.04 to a clean installation and am busy saving all the things I need to install to get _autosetup and configure to complete so that next time I don't have to go searching for the answers again. Will have a think about this when finished.

I would strongly recommend installing WSL in preference to VirtualBox. X11 applications display on the Windows desktop, File explorer sees both filesystems. I have my Windows BOINC and WSL boinc directories on the same drive and can access both via Win or linux. Works very well.
