Whilst CPDN take a break from any more work, this might be of interest: https://www.vodafone.co.uk/newscentre/planet/why-tropical-cyclones-could-become-even-deadlier/ Requires the DreamLab app to be installed on iOS/macOS or Android/Chromebook. Then select the Tropical Cyclones project. |

Hopefully it's not too long of a break but I wonder if it might be. I tried using phone for BOINC and I feel like the demand on the battery is too high and it'll wear out prematurely. Better options would probably be a PC or laptop, perhaps even a macOS or Android VM if PC is Windows or Linux. |

Hopefully it's not too long of a break but I wonder if it might be.Unless there is a setting I haven't found, the Dreamlabs app only runs when the phone is charging. It can't be using a lot of power as phone doesn't warm up at all unlike if running BOINC with just two cores crunching. (when I run BOINC I stick to just one core because of that. Be interesting to see what speed the dreamlabs app runs on my Linux box though. (Currently downloading ISO. |

I've not noticed any temp bump from extra power. It's a well behaved app. I use both my phone & chromebook, though the CBook is significantly faster. It uses a very small amount of memory. Have been trying to find out exactly what the Tropical Storms app is computing in such a small footprint but there's scant details about it on the web (other than the publicity). From what I can gather it's crunching small amounts of data rather than running a real model but it's hard to find out more details. Anyway, it's a neat idea. Even if someone only runs whilst actually charging if that scales up to a decent percentage of all the mobile phones, they have alot of compute there. Just shows what you can do when you have dedicated resources of a company behind it. |

Having got Android 9 running under VB Dreamlabs kept stopping. Have posted on their problem page. Now downloading an Android12 iso to see if that works. |

We downloaded a Monterey iso yesterday. If I get time over the weekend, will see if I can get the newer mac VM working with VirtualBox. |

Yes DreamLab only works when power is plugged, whether charging or not. I've not noticed any temp bump from extra power. It's a well behaved app. I use both my phone & chromebook, though the CBook is significantly faster. Sounds like it's better than BOINC on phones. Makes me wonder how much work one can get done under those circumstances though. The tasks must be tiny. It uses a very small amount of memory. Have been trying to find out exactly what the Tropical Storms app is computing in such a small footprint but there's scant details about it on the web (other than the publicity). From what I can gather it's crunching small amounts of data rather than running a real model but it's hard to find out more details. Yes, not a lot of details. The only thing that's mentioned is: "... the three-year DreamLab project is not about weather forecasting, but about risk assessment to help civic authorities prepare for such natural disasters." That's pretty broad so who knows what exactly is being calculated. |

Update on the running in VM under Linux. It starts off OK, manages to get 2 calculations done then no more. I start investigating, it offers to let me increase data allowance and it is only after I do that it keeps stopping. I also tried Anbox and installed it using snap but haven't been able to get it to run because my kernel doesn't have ashmem module. Edit: And it is a long time since I last compiled a kernel. Might have to learn all over again. |
