One of our allotment society members gave a talk just over a week ago on this.
She works for Society for Protection of Underground Networks
We learned that mycorrhizal networks absorb ~13 billion tons of CO2 annually, which is ~40% of global emissions. Much of this (proportion unknown?) cycles fairly quickly back into the atmosphere as soil microbes respire, but nonetheless it sounds like an important element of the carbon cycle.
