Has anyone upgraded/installed linux Mint 22 released recently? Were there any boinc or CPDN related issues?

I have two Linux Mint machines: host 1497236 (Mint 20.3), and host 1498009 (Mint 21.3). Both started at v20, and v21 was an in-situ upgrade: it was a smooth upgrade, and kept the BOINC installation intact. The only downside was that v21 tightened the security requirements for running test versions from a PPA.

BOINC has been upgrading its installation tools for Linux, in various flavours - but they don't include Mint. It would be good to test the two together, and maybe extend the compatibility list - see https://boinc.berkeley.edu/linux_install.php

But I'm running out of hardware, and rooms to put it in - any takers?

I'll try it on an old machine. I am particularly interested to know if the 32bit compatibility libraries are still 'compatible' with the linux 32bit CPDN apps.

It should work fine. Mint 22 is based on Ubuntu 24.04 and the command for install of the 32 bit libraries for that Ubuntu was the same as for the previous versions.

And Ubuntu 24.04 is on BOINC's supported list too, so the combination should work.

"should" .. we've been in this game long enough to know 'should' is the key phrase there! I'll give it a try and see what happens. This would be my 2nd Mint major upgrade and so far they have been smooth and trouble-free.

I've just done the monthly chores on my Mint 21 machine, so I had a look around. They don't seem to have released a 21 to 22 migration tool yet - they usually follow some time after the 'fresh install' release.

I share your skepticism about the BOINC installer - especially as an upgrade from a different installation pathway last time. I could probably recover my data folder in due course - especially now it's on a different drive - but it would take time and care. And GPUGrid have a glut of Linux work just at the moment.

Thanks for that - I had a quick look at the Mint pages and searched for 'upgrade' this morning, but failed to find that page. So I decided to bite the bullet and brush the cobwebs off my credit card - new i5 build arriving somewhere near the end of next week. That'll give me a clean (and sacrificial) environment, so I can see exactly what the new BOINC scripts are supposed to do, and see how they match the old ones based on Debian distros.

I would have suggested a dry-run in a virtual environment, but far be it for me to dissuade you from buying new kit!

The upgrade to Mint 22 removes libboinc7, based on boinc 7.24, and replaces it with libboinc7t64, based on v8.0.4.

I had to look it up: "The t64 suffix means the software in question is modified to use 64-bit time_t , so it will be ready for January 19, 2038, when the 32-bit version of time_t will overflow (the Y2K38 problem)"

Mint 22 upgrade also complained about wine (for running Windows CPDN apps on linux):

The following sources are defined in DEB822 format.  This format isn't supported yet.

Last, at the time of writing this, if installing from WineHQ, their winehq-stable branch is not yet available for Mint 22 (aka Ubuntu noble). I opted for their 'develop' release and can confirm wine is now working fine with CPDN's wah2 app. Note wine9 IS available from Mint 22 archives.

New hardware arrived this morning! Unboxed, hooked up cables, slipped under the workbench, ready for software in about half an hour.

Had multiple problems getting Mint 22 to load from iso / DVD. Ultimately, I think it was some rogue BIOS settings - but this BIOS is like nothing I've seen before, so it took some time to find a likely culprit. Once I'd done that, it was plain sailing - I'm posting from it now.

The BOINC instructions for Ubuntu 24.04 offer either v8.0.2 stable, or v8.0.4 alpha. But in fact, they both install v7.24.1 - and in user mode, not the systemd version I've grown used to. I'll tell them.

I've still got to configure the 2TB data disk, so I think I'll break for a walk and come back to it later.

At long last - I've got the proper v8.0.4 Alpha test release (with some help from Vitalii), and got a working configuration. Data is on the dedicated 2TB data drive, remote monitoring is enabled and working, and I can see five floating point Einstein tasks plus a big GPU task running. I'll let them run for a while to burn in, until it's needed for something else.

I can't say it's been a pleasant experience - I feel like I've been playing whack-a-mole all day. Every time I seemed to get one problem solved, another one broke again. It's installed itself in user mode, so all the files are in different places - but I think I've got them all down to the simplest working configuration, given my preferred operating mode.

This doesn't feel ready for the big time - too many niggles and downright bugs, not only in areas which one would expect to be touched in an 'alpha' build. But I'll keep reporting them until we reach stalemate.

No issues here running Linux Mint 22. I do however mostly run on Linux distros, Mint 21 & 22 and Garuda Linux, running BOINC flathub on flatpak https://flathub.org/apps/edu.berkeley.BOINC
because of some oooold nvidia cards, that have depreciated from most of the current linux kernels.
Seems to be the easiest way as with flatpak it always finds the GPU, it was a battle on one machine constantly.
