1) Message boards : Number crunching : Planned outage for BOS and ESEA

I\'ve spent the last few days checking everything was working correctly, and it seems so. This is what happened Sunday:

Around 10 am local time, the database drive stalled once again, and I shut down the system, knowing I was going to correct things later.

Around 3 pm local time, I had moved everything to my work area, and wanted to start up to test everything would work fine when attempting to do the drive switch. But now the database drive box didn\'t start at all - no fan, no light, nothing. The other one seemed to start as usual. I thought it might be the power supply, so I switch to the other power supply - this time the box started, but I really didn\'t like the sound, so I turned it off quickly. The other box didn\'t like the power supply from the database drive box.

So, now I had two drives that I didn\'t know if I could even get working. Anyway, with two drives to switch and only two drives to replace them, I could wave goodbye to my RAID plans. The only hope I had was that it was the external boxes that were failing, not the hard drives themselves. And it turned out to be just that. So after I had copied the database drive successfully, I made the sites available again while copying the other drives - before moving things back where they belong.

Thanks Carl - the better solution in my view ;) I was actually going to mention that Spinup, forexample, shouldn\'t be filtered out, as it has always either been non-existent (in the beginning) or included in main, but you figured that out on your own :)

Sorr for all the commotion - and thank you for taking it in good spirit :)

To sort of add on to Les\' notes about migrating over, I had a brainstorm to move credits over. The next stats run should do this

Well thats messed up the BOINC combined stats big time ;)

No kidding :D Just noticed unrealistic jumps on many team mates, including myself - so I\'m working right now to filter BBC out of boinc combined, but then I noticed one who was only crunching for BBC... Boinc combined for him is zero at the moment. Don\'t know yet how many crunch for other projects but not cpdn main - they\'ll loose some credits until I know how to deal with this.

It\'s linked by cross-project-id so you have to make sure that they match on each project (go to \"Your Account\" here and on the BBC Expt site to make sure). If you used the same email addresses in both places you\'re probably fine.

What happens with those running BBC now but not the main project, and now or later decides to run the main project?

Will credits gained through BBC/CCE be moved to the main project

Yes
No
Maybe

It\'s still being discussed, but the consensus of opinion of the BBC crunchers is that they want their credits etc copied across.
If they are, then it will probably be based on cpids, and won\'t occur for some time yet.

Ok, thanks

PS
Bruno. Could you please post something in the shout box at BOINCstats to say that the cpdn beta site is NOT a new public project.
It\'s just a test site for stress testing new types of models before they\'re released on the well known public cpdn site.
There will be NO export xml files, and everyone running models there are expected to report ALL failures in the appropriate OS section, including all error messages, and hardware details.
And they should keep reading the site messages, as new versions/models are constantly being made available as bugs are reported.

Thanks

I will do that

I\'ve been late to discover this, sorry. I have a question that would be of interest for stats sites: Will credits gained through BBC/CCE be moved to the main project? I don\'t hope so, as it would be a ton of work on databases, but if that is the plan, it would be nice with a heads up ;)

For those who haven\'t read the BOS RSS feed, the BOS message boards or the ESEA message boards, here some info:

The hard drive containing the databases has been giving trouble these last few days. It is close to give up. I have two hard drives which was planned to be used as a replacement for the boot/system drive, but this is more important right now. So this weekend I will spend some time replacing the database drive. I will try to build a RAID with these two new hard drives, but this may take some time, as it is the first RAID I\'ve ever made. Keeping all data/programs completely intact during the process is an extra task, and may make it take a bit longer, as I don\'t have a third clean hard drive to save things on. But I\'ll do my best to do this as fast as possible. If all things go wrong I have back-ups.

So, just so you know, the BOS site and services and the ESEA site will be down for a while this weekend.

ESEA (Earth Space Exploration Agency) is looking for more Agency Scientists.

It is obvious that research is abundant, and our supercomputer can\'t keep up with the current amount of processors. So, the Agency is looking for more staff and the processors that come with this additional staff.

Currently the supercomputer is operating in the mid 40 GFlop range, and we need at least 100 for the time being.

There are an unlimited amount of positions vacant - just plug-in your processors.

Don\'t know where else to post this..

I get an error message when trying to access profile_menu.php:
Parse error: parse error, unexpected T_CONSTANT_ENCAPSED_STRING in /websites/boinc/projects/cpdnboinc/html/inc/uotd.inc on line 92

Dare I say it? \"Join ESEA (Earth Space Exploration Agency\"? Ups, now I did it. Oh well, go ahead and join us - try clicking on the sig, click Join, then add climateprediction to your project list, then click Join right by climateprediction at the project list - then you\'re with a great team ;)

The site has been updated.

Yup. And it\'s kinda predictable that this would slow things down with that project. I do hope it will get started sometime, though

What deadlines are given for v. 4.22? The v. 4.19 wu I\'m working on has a deadline far far less than a year - which means BOINC practically only wants to run that one to meet the deadline... Other projects get no CPU time unless I force a temporary suspend of CPDN

> the problem seems to be that I am relying on the teamid in the result table,
> but somewhere along the line BOINC hasn't been putting teams in there. since
> that isn't reliable, I'm going to just go back to the "old system" where your
> team in the user table determines how many credits the team gets (which means
> that a person "takes" their credits with them if they join another team).
> also don't forget that credit calcs are run twice a day so it may be up to 12
> hours until you switch/join a team that you'll see the stats change.

So in other words it'll go back to being the sum of current members' credits. Well, it's better than what I'm experiencing at the moment which is no new credit for the team, but a decaying RAC (well, the RAC thing is to be expected as it was way too high for normal curcomstances ;))

Anyway, happy to know something is being done, and cudos for great and hard work

> I think the problem now is that BOINC doesn't just sum up the user credits to
> get the total team credits.

The non-boinc way was due to a fix of another problem (http://climateapps2.oucs.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc/forum_thread.php?id=2619), so I guess the non-boinc way (sum of members credits) will return if not currently used ;)
