I see that OpenIFS 43r3 Baroclinic Lifecycle has appeared as a third OpenIFS task type.
Yes, I described this back in message https://www.cpdn.org/forum_thread.php?id=9149&postid=66191 I'm also working with a student at U. Oxford on another customized version of OpenIFS for seasonal forecasts with perturbations to the surface model. The plan is for several batches of ~3000 workunits each, though this will be a while yet as it's still being developed & tested. I'm not sure what the workunit count will be for the lifecycle model.

I don’t know all that much about computers. This OpenIFS stuff will it be open to Windows users or is it just more penguin food. I am running Win10 and 11 on different machines.

I think I also may have lost a WU from the new batch of Had2’s. I am running Win11 8 core (4 phyical, 4 hyper-theded) 2.4 GHz with 12 Gb of Ram. Last night when I last checked I had eight running and 1 “waiting to start.” This morning all are running and the “waiting to start” one was gone.

GOOD!!! Maybe I can grab some. It's been so long I have just about given up in CPDN.

This is for the ANZ regional models so Windows tasks. The tasks in testing completed a while ago but other work prevented further progress till now.

Any idea when Windows work might appear? it's been been about a year since I had anything from CPDN

Since 2019 ... the user appears to have 4470 devices attached.
Scanning down the sorted list for credits, somewhere around 90% have not successfully returned task completions.
I think there is a case for deleting the SU account.
Unfortunately, it'll keep getting re-created like a bad penny.

I think the only guaranteed solution is for BOINC project administrators - collectively - to speak truth to power. They'll have to decide whether the 'power' in question is David Anderson in person, the Regents of the University of California corporately, or both.

Power often just ignores truth and goes on doing as it pleases.

BBC article here

Though I am old enough to have seen articles suggesting nuclear fusion is only 10-15 years away from commercial viability for quite a while!

Dito! I’ll believe in fusion power when it comes on line. Nuclear Fusion has been “just around the corner” since about 1950. Apparently it is a verrrry long block to reach that corner.

There is Bill Gates recent book: How to Avoid a Climate Disaster: The Solutions We Have and the Breakthroughs We Need, but be warned it is depressing. It lays out in detail the many and diverse obstacles to moving away from carbon containing fuels. I came away feeling that the transition was not going to be hard as Mr. Gates states, but nearly impossible.

It looks like Microsoft is making it easier to run Linux GUI apps from Windows. Only on "insider" builds now, but hopefully coming in a Windows update sometime this year.

https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/news/microsoft/windows-10-now-lets-you-seamlessly-run-linux-gui-apps/

GOOD!!! I have been wanting to try Linux under Win10 WSL, but, the things that has stopped me is not being able to control it with a GUI. I’m not much for trying to use the command line.

So can you actually buy a laptop you can use on your lap now? The last one I used would overheat instantly, since the intake vent was underneath, where your lap is blocking it! It should have been sold as a tabletop.

And I thought a lot of gamers were going for laptops now, so surely they're adding a lot of power for that, or is that all in the GPU?

Yeah, they do say not to hold a laptop on your lap because of overheating. The name has stuck from the old days. I think the proper term is notebook.

You can get faster gaming laptops if you are prepared to shell out big bucks. They are in the $1200 USD range. That is out of my price range. Recently, I have been buying “refurbished” laptops in the $350 USD range. These models usually sold originally for about $650 USD.

I have noticed that the performance of laptops (the only kind of PC’s I have personal experience with) hasn’t increased much in the last few years. Going back 12 to15 years, it used to be that every time I replaced a machine (about every 2.5 to 3 years) the clock speed of the chip and amount of RAM were increased for the same money. Recently, this has not been true. Now if you want an increase in speed or RAM the price goes up at more than just the rate of inflation.

14) Message boards : Number crunching : Time for another moan about w/u not restarting (Message 63723)

Post:
So, I found one machine had stopped responding by a vnc connection. I went and checked the machine and found its keyboard UN-responsive as well. So there was no way to shutdown Boinc. The mouse was still working so the machine was shutdown.

Well we all know what this might mean for those weak and feeble climate w/u. On startup 2 w/u had fainted and died. Some 11 days of processing lost between them. But a grain of sand in the history of climate processing.
I have bucket of ARP w/u to do instead. They love a restart, in-case there is a fault with the machine and it needs a restart.
I really do get frustrated just how easy these climate w/u pass-out and die for any reason.

Has everyone totally forgotten about making backups? I used to make them regularly. It’s fast and easy (at least in Windows, I never tried it in Linux.) That way if you lost a WU due to an external problem (outside the model itself) it can be restored.

Pretty sure part of the problem is that as more is learned about the scientists learn more, the work they are doing has got more complex and that means bigger models that require faster computers with more memory to run in a reasonable time. That many batches are linked to student's PhDs accounts for much of the erratic nature of work availability.

I would question whether it was, "ordinary people" donating their computer time at the start however when tasks on even fast computers would take over six months to complete or not as the case may be.

I don’t know about others, but, I was one of those ordinary people running the 160 year models on a single core 1.2 Ghz laptop with 512 MGb ‘s (that’s right Mega not Giga) of ram. They took 3,300 hours to complete. They were a challenge.

The truth is that this project has strayed for its original intent. That intent was to allow ordinary people to contribute to scientific research using there ordinary home computers. Those machines overwhelming run Windows. Most people don’t and never will use Linux. It’s just not user friendly enough. If you don’t believe me just read all the posts form Linux user who can’t get this project running on their machines. Windows run this project straight out of the box. The average person isn’t going to spend days hunting down the right compatibility libraries and installing them.

Also, as the models get bigger and more complicated, they are starting to exceed the capabilities of most people’s equipment. The average person isn’t going to buy a bigger, more expensive machine to run climate models. They will just move to other projects or give up.

Sorry about the rant.

Yes, and all of it is set to run only on Os’s that are run by only a tiny minority of the public. Windows is run on about 87% of all the home computers in the World.

Legally the mechanical part is your property, you can burn it or take a sledgehammer to it. Operating System is not. You can void your warranty.
“Brevity and conciseness are the parents of correction.”
Incorrect, they just say that to stop you meddling. They also say you're not allowed to upgrade your desktop (eg. insert a graphics card) or the warranty is void. But they can't void a warranty legally.

In the U.S you do own the hardware of your computer, but, the Windows OS is a different matter. When you buy a copy of Windows all you are buying is a license to run the OS. The software itself is still the property of Microsoft. It’s the same with CPDN. The models that we run run using software that belongs to the U.K Met Office and CPDN only has a license to use it without making modifications.

Welcome to the project. In your post you don’t state what OS your are running. If it is Windows, the reason that you have not received any work is because there is none. There have only been a very few batches in the last 8 months since Covid started. The batches tend to be small (3000 WU’s or so) and they go fast. Three batches were released about 10 day ago and were snapped up in about 3 hour.

Good Luck.
