1) Message boards : Cafe CPDN : WCG African Rainfall Project (ARP) restart update Apr 25, 2024

Their new project is running at 1km resolution. That's very high, 25km grid resolution Is the "25km grid" a 5x5 square (25 square km), or a 25x25 square (625 square km)? If it's the first then it's a fair size step, if the latter then it's a really big step in resolution. |

It would appear that there are two problems: First, and most obvious to many is the failure of downloads and uploads Second is Trickles not being logged correctly, for example one of my running tasks https://main.cpdn.org/result.php?resultid=22520635 did a tickle upload at 14:08 today: 31/10/2024 14:50:42 | climateprediction.net | Finished upload of wah2_eas25_20vn_209112_24_1026_012333978_2_r901766137_16.zip (99883726 bytes) But this tickle isn't showing up on the task's list of tickles - the 14:08 tickle should be the only one. The only tickles that appear to have been logged properly are for tasks that already had recorded and logged tickles. |
3) Questions and Answers : Windows : WAH2 not checkpointing?
Message 71686 Posted 26 Oct 2024 by rob |
Checkpoints have nothing to do with the guesstimation at remaining time. CPDN does save a checkpoint at regular intervals (hours not minutes). Expected run duration is only recalculated after a trickle-up has occurred, which is at about 5% progress intervals, or a re-start. Until you have completed a number of similar tasks BOINC can't accurately calculate the expected run duration for a task - it uses a very crude estimated for your computer's performance, which is initially quite pessimistic, hence over estimates the expected duration. |

Sounds interesting - if only I had enough memory... |

Thanks for the update Glen. I didn't want to abort them just incase they were really wanted. |
6) Message boards : Number crunching : Batch 995 has been closed

I got four of them, all showing as being the first time out, after being marked as "didn't need" at some time in the past (no date given). https://main.cpdn.org/workunit.php?wuid=12296891 |

Interesting, now comes question. Can you change that date, or it "hard coded"? |
9) Message boards : Number crunching : Changes to website.
Message 71502 Posted 19 Sep 2024 by rob |
Welllllllll........ The first page is FAR too large, and much of the useful stuff (like the links to the forum) are right down at the bottom, and many folks will have died of boredom before getting there. It's a little better on my mobile, but still not as clear as one would hope. |

Almost certainly YES. Keep an eye on https://main.cpdn.org/forum_thread.php?id=9314 |
11) Questions and Answers : Windows : //climateprediction.net/ failed: transient HTTP error
Message 71429 Posted 17 Sep 2024 by rob |
It is not the same problem as the February one. The project administrators have been doing a lot of work on the servers and, as part of that work have changed a lot of the URLs to be of the "new" cpdn.org root instead of the "old" climateprediction.net root. Do you have any idea what your bill would be without all your solar? (Your latest bill is about a third of mine, I don't have an EV or solar to "worry" about.... but plans are afoot.) |
14) Message boards : Number crunching : Receiving new tasks with impossible to meet deadlines
Message 71299 Posted 17 Aug 2024 by rob |
The "% CPU time" applies to jobs being run under BOINC's control. A BOINC job will run for 50% of the time as dictated by either the operating system or the hardware, then will sit idle for another 50% of the time. This has two affects, first it doubles the clock time for a job to run, and second it can place a thermal stress on the CPU due to these repeated thermal cycles. |

I suspend running tasks before shutting my PC down at night, the current load have resumed OK in the morning with no problems (provided I remember to resume them). They've survived about a dozen nights by doing this so far, and I assume they will survive the last few and complete soon. |

Thanks for the news about the new data for the New Zealand work :-) Do we know yet how much of the East Asia data is affected by the anomalous handling of land vs sea? |

It's stranded, I'm not counting those, why would that matter, I just twisted them up hard and measured the total. This single statement clearly demonstrates your total lack of understanding of cable construction. Twisting cables in the manner you describe does not totally remove the packing space between the cores so the actual CSA of the metal is always less than that which you've guessed at. You are lazy, arrogant and stupid - clearly demonstrated by your disabling the "not wearing your seat belt" alarm when driving - don't forget it's an offence which costs you money when caught. Boasting about such acts does eventually end you up in court. P.S. to horrify you even further I just snipped the wire on my new car coming out of the seatbelt socket. That foiled the health and softy system pretty easily. It thinks I have the belt on at all times. The bonging noise every 2 seconds for a few minutes is damn dangerous as it's very distracting while driving. |
